I have a used PWD II on the way. I understand it has two fuses, which presumably are small slo-bow. What are their amperages? Thanks,

Hi, getting ready to replace the fuse(s) in my PWD DSD DAC with Quantum Black fuses.

Looking at this forum and DSD “how to”, the pictures in the “how to” only show one fuse. Where is the second fuse ?

The two fuse holders are alongside each other, but as I understand it from these forums the inside one is the main power fuse. The other serves another power function, not always in use (Bridge?).

A little more detail: Only one fuse is in any circuit in the DS power supply. Consider the other a spare.

I don’t have a Bridge in my DAC, and I only have 1 Quantum black fuse, so this should work out ok (I hope)…,

Got the top cover off and there are 2 fuses. F1 says Digital and F2 says Analog. Which one do I replace if only replacing 1 fuse ?

lanordby1, you would replace the F1 digital fuse with the new fuse.

The other fuse is not used. I’ll be honest when I had it open and replaced F1 I should have removed F2 just to see that all did still work without F2, but I didn’t, I would be curious!

I replaced the F1 fuse, and like you after I buttoned it back up, was thinking to pull the F2 fuse and see if it would power up, but didn’t. Too late now as it’s back in my system. Oh well, maybe next time.

My recollection of the PWD is that it has a separate power supply for the analog output stage.

Therefore both fuses are used.

The Direct Stream DAC and the CD transports do not use the analog fuse.

That is a great point st50maint, I saw PWD DSD and assumed it was the upgraded PWD. If it isn’t then really true on changing both… Sorry Lonnie if this is the case.

Maybe its just me but I tried to change the fuses in my pwd a few years ago and it was a pita. I could not get the little screws to come loose and after about an hour I just gave up. Anyone else have problems getting the top off to get to the fuses?

The top can be hard to get off because of the shielding. (My DS started as an early PWD I and doesn’t have that shielding so my top comes off easily.) The recommended approach involves the use of all-threads to push the top off. Look above under Resources/Manuals and then choose the Direct Stream Kit for a description of how to do it.

The DS I got back from repair recently no longer had the those pita aluminum strips (shielding?) and the top popped right off with the screws. I wonder if there has been a change in the design or a decision that the strips are not really necessary.

I recently purchased a PS Audio Perfectwave Transport and Perfectwave DAC. I think I mis-read this thread (and then didn’t remember where I saw it) but I’m looking to try upgrading fuses in both units. The Perfectwave units are connected using the I2S connection, and then the DAC is connected to my Bryston Preamp using balanced connectors.

So,

How many fuses do I need to buy. I was thinking I didn’t need the analog fuses, but now I’m not so sure.

I just replaced the fuses in my PWT & PWD. While I was at it, I tried powering up my PWT with only the digital fuse in and the analog fuse removed. Everything powered up and the disk ran just fine with the elapsed time counter ticking off the seconds that the song was playing. I didn’t have it hooked up into my stereo so I’m just going to assume music would have played since everything else was working as it should. With the digital fuse out and the analog fuse in, nothing works. No lights, no camera, no action.

You will need to keep a fuse in the analog fuse holder though. The fuse holder with cover is fairly elegant in its design, but the cover holds the fuse, not the base. Without the fuse inserted in the cover, the cover will just be loose, eventually rattling around inside the component. Think of it as a really handy place to store your back-up fuse.
