I listened to the BluRay Dolby Atmos the other night. Worth every penny if you have 4 in ceiling Speakers. My 2003 SACD still holds up though. As does the MFSL yellow strip LP that I ripped along with a 2016 LP rip that friend’s have lent me.
I had the 2003 LP reissue but foolishly sold it along with my 200g Quiex of SEBtP.
As much as I love the title track, my favorite bit of Tusk happens with the two opening tracks because I like to imagine when Lindsey, surely totally strung out on cocaine and not having slept in days, played the final record for the suits at Warner for the first time.
I’m sure they were expecting “Rumours 2”.
It opens with “Over and Over” and the suits are like “Yeah. This is gonna sell billions. I mean, sure, it took too long and cost millions to record, but here it is. A nice Christine McVie ballad. Cool cool.” And that song fades out and “Ledge” opens up with the fart guitar sounds and they look over at Lindsey who’s surely rocking back and forth and smirking because this is probably his favorite track and they poor executive goes “My God. What have we done.”
That $120 price tag for Lamb on LP is a bit much although, as I said, I’ll probably get the SACD. Lamb also doesn’t lend itself to being spread across four LPs. It’s too jarring because it’s a story and the breaks would be distracting. Selling breaks apart pretty easily with the long songs, but Lamb is hard. That’s why I seldom listen to my Decemberists “Hazards of Love” record. The record changes take me out of the story. Maybe it’s time to go back to putting records together with sides 1 and 4 on one and 2 and 3 on the other and get an automatic player to drop the record.
I’m glad they’re spacing them out though. It will let me plan to budget and give me time to decide if the juice is worth the squeeze.
DJ culture has contributed a huge amount to music, and, well culture (like it or not), but one result is DD record players seem to be aimed exclusively at DJs now and for the last 30 years (in terms of specs etc.) and that is a great shame. Well, the affordable ones do anyway.
I really like my recently bought Planar 2, it’s a crackin’ bit of engineering to budget and sounds great
But what a missed opportunity.
Maybe it’s just me.
