Today Sun Ra is 108….

Hope there are some fellow Sun Ra fans on the forum. As a young art student my friends and I would smoke copious amounts of cheap weed and listen to all the Sun Ra we could get our hands on.

Once again Happy Birthday Sun Ra!
Marshall Allen’s 100th birthday is coming up May 25th. Marsg=hall continues to lead the Sun Ra Arkestra to this day.
Saw Sun Ra back in the day at The Blue Note (or was it Village Vanguard? I can’t remember). Larger than life. A cool night.
Original LP, and a reissue LP as well as the early Evidence CD, so I think I’m good.
Sun Ra performances were always unforgettable. Saw him and the Arkestra many times in Chicago and Madison. Booked the Arkestra for Madison pre-covid.
I saw him in a rural college in the mid 70s. Within 10 minutes half the student audience got up and left. I suspect they had no idea what was going on. For those of us who stayed, it was a treat.
I saw him in '74. I started investigating his stuff and found I really liked the early stuff, even more, and stuff after '74 even less. I have probably over a hundred of his discs. . . enough that I have not been buying many new ones, and have been disappointed in most that I have bought this decade.
Happy Birthday Mr. Blount!
