Perfect Album (no. 1)

J.P.

This project is a great idea, but without knowing the artists, or even the genre, means we aren’t armed with much for coming up with an album name, although there have been a few good suggestions thus far.

I like the decision to keep it out of the download domain. Unfortunately the pricing would count me out of buying it. $40 USD would possibly turn north of $80 AUD by the time it’s shipped here, which for a CD/DVD combo probably puts it 3 to 4 times the price of buying any vanilla CD/DVD locally.

Call it “Phoenix”

In keeping with the Colorado theme, the DirectStream operating system iterations are being named after Colorado mountains, why not name the albums in the series after Colorado rivers and go with the flow (music flows).

I definitely agree with the crowd, this is a great idea. I commend PS Audio for taking a stand AND actually doing something about it. As for the name of the album (we are naming the first album, correct? Not the series.), I'm drawing a blank for original witty names. I can only think of lame variations on common terms, e.g., "Free Range Recording" or "Fair Trade Recording". Not even sure those fit as names for a single release. Also, someone will probably need to make sure the name selected isn't trademarked or copywrited too. As for the cost of the music, $40 seems a tad high, but you will get two versions, one of which would probably cost the same or close) as a download. I'll go for the first then decide, based on music, if I want to buy future releases. Edit: I have no idea how I got italics, I didn't press the button, but I can't turn it off on my ipad.

We’re going to ship by US mail and the most expensive we found for anywhere in the world was $12 so perhaps it’s not so bad. And, perhaps this is a good reason to maybe do downloads. I may have to rethink everything.

It is great to see so many new members posting in this thread. We hope you stick around. :)

This is a great idea. I spent the better part of the last four years trying to come up with what was next for a small non-profit publishing company (books). I think a lot also applies to music.

I agree with producing a nice physical product, it’s what I call the “Big Beautiful Book”. Think new cookbooks that have great photos and a ribbon or two to use as bookmarks. People want those.

People also want choice and many are moving away from bookshelves full of paper, vinyl and CDs. These customers (sometimes the same ones) want a digital version they download. Digital also need to be well produced so they look/sound great on a variety of platforms. With music that means hi-res downloads and, if not MP3/ACC something else that is easily playable on smartphones with the liner notes easily readable as well. With an iPad in hand one can play a hi-res download with the appropriate tech, or stream an MP3 with bluetooth, no matter which one can view the liner notes while I listen. Very tactile and one don’t need to store all that stuff on a bookshelf.

Unfortunately, it’s not one or the other, it’s both products that media companies need to produce.

A great idea! This is an industry that needs a new concept or it will disappear; your plan is very bold and exciting. Like many others, I would prefer the download format but will support whatever you decide.

As for names, the messages I get from the artwork suggest “Renewal” or “Breathing New Life” or something along those lines.

As for the concept itself, “Making It Right” suggests both doing it right, and correcting a broken business model.

Whatever you choose, I will be a supporter!

Sign me up! I believe that we all want the artists to make more of the proceeds for their music and that the company shouldn’t lose money, either. Have you considered selling subscriptions to a series? Guaranteed cash flow!

Album Titles:

Art for Art’s Sake, Money for God’s Sake (although Godley & Creme - 10 CC - used that)

Dollars and Sense (tongue firmly in cheek)

Antidisestablishmentarianism (from the 60s)

Counterflow

I’ve come to realize why you off-loaded the naming… it’s hard to come up with good ones! But I do enjoy reading everyone’s suggestions.

This is excellent. I am all for the physical media as well even if it is somewhat wasteful. I will burn it to file when I get it however I will have it if I ever crash and burn. Easier than finding the download again. (Yes I will back it up. blush_gif )

I do also like the idea of a Amazon type preview of a track as noted just to get a taste of what the album will be like. Even a 15 second snippet is good.

How about “In a New Light” for an album name… (Not sure if that’s taken already… tmi_gif)

Anywhoo, put me down for the first one…

No rule against reusing an album title. They are not copyrighted. Think about how may "Greatest Hits" albums there are.

First Issue (PiL fans will get it.)

Paul, what a wonderful idea. I wish you the best during this endeavor. Regardless of all of our nerdy obsessions with our big rigs, at the end of the day, it is always all about the music and the musicians. Regarding the title challenge, here are four that might convey your intended message:

-Recognition

-Redemption

-Artists First

-Art Matters

Can’t wait to hear this!

-Second Sight, Music in the Mind’s Eye

-Renewing the Audio Dream

-A Bridge to the Artist

-Why We Listen

-Frampton Comes Alive!shaking-head-no-smiley-emoticon_gif
