I saw this in an email this morning. I may have to grab this one!
I think you will love it. My review just got posted at Positive Feedback, here.
It is an easy recommendation, a warhorse if ever there was one.
Yes, certainly so. My excitement comes with finally getting a digital reissue of the Reiner performance that is so enjoyable. The CD and SACD have been poor substitutes. This new release from HDTT is so substantially improved over what we poor digital listeners have had available to us.
Iâll have to agree. The CD or SACD versions sounds digital or artificial to me. The HDTT DSD256 version of Scherazade and Coltrane Live at the Vanguard sounds more like a master tape sound, like what I heard at my dealer friends place with his modified tape machine with those $600 apiece albums. gives my top end turntable a run for the money, itâs that good! DSD256 with the DS MkII is the best digital Iâve ever heard, itâs so live and emotional.
From a 15ips tape to Pure DSD256 release. It is without question the best sounding digital transfer this album has seen (no âimoâ caveats!).
As the saying goes, âtiming is everythingâ.
I bought some albums last SundayâŚ
With the Fourth of July coming I figured their would be a sale.
Ouch!
Agree. This may not be their 4th of July sale, though. There may yet be another after this one comes and closes.
I may wait and see if there is a bigger sale next week. Iâm in no hurry Iâm re-buying music I already own.
Ah, and how many times have we all done that!
I just did. Bought a few of the âBudgetâ gold cd(r)s.
Finally, this most recent survey of releases from HDTT has been published at Positive Feedback. Perhaps timely since HDTTâs current July 4 sale is still ongoing. Enjoy!
Shouldnât these be called 'high definition vinyl transfers?
It turns out that HDTT digitals may be largely created from vinyl, not master tapes. EG, on the home page, there is a link to recordings from original master tapes. Notably, there are only 3 such products presented.
I was duped it appears by the recommendations for HDTT.
And, quoting from your reviewâŚ
*" Yes, when we start from vinyl to create a digital file, there are now multiple generations of âstuffâ between us that the edit master tape. But, an original pressing LP was made when the analog tapes were freshâŚIn the VRR series we are, of course, listening to Bobâs vinyl playback system. His choices of equipment may not be your choices. But, at the same time, whenever we listen to a transfer from analog tape, we are also listening to someoneâs choice in playback system. Tape player electronics and setup vary all over the map. Donât fool yourself into thinking that tape is a neutral standard that sounds the same from every source. It does not. The electronics in the tape preamps differ, the magnetic heads differ, the transports differ, the alignments differ, the bias settings differâit all affects the sound such that a transfer from one system will not sound identical to a transfer from another system. Each reflects the sonic and aesthetic choices being made by the person who put together that system. My choice: just enjoy the excellent vinyl playback system Bob has assembled and continues to tweak and upgrade."
Copies from copies from copies, how many generations before our purchases?
I believe HDTT just recently started doing Vinyl restoration recordings and the title will note itâs transferred from vinyl. Most are from old tapes as their name suggests.
All the ârecordsâ noted in @Rushtonâs review indicate that they were âSourced from a 2-track Tapeâ
But, @Rushton closes his detailed review with discussion that these tapes were sourced from someoneâs vinyl playback system. I cannot find in any of the product descriptions that they were sourced from vinyl, learning this only through @Rushtonâs commentary.
So, are these needle/tape drops licensed? I know some reissues out of Europe rely on the fact that copyrights have expired. You see some dodgy 6CD sets of all the Monk/MJQ/Brubeck releases going for little money on Amazon for example.
I havenât bought a title from HDTT in a while but one that caught my attention is Fritz Reiner and the CSO Scheherazade which is a vinyl restoration to DXD than to DSD 256.
