Hi jazznut, I just run across some of your older posts about the mastering / labels and very impressed how thorough your summaries are; I started seriously collecting vinyls since last year and still on the learning curve. Thank you so much for sharing such in depth knowledge and experience!
Thanks youâre welcome! But itâs not my knowledge, Iâm just collecting opinions of people who are professionals and involved in both, digital and analog and thought this might be valuable, as weâre usually just reading from folks with little, no, uneven or mainly singular experience.
I thought of one more LP that I think is kind of special.
Frank Sinatra And Duke Ellington -
âFrancis A And Edward Kâ
It has been a while since I compared the LP to the CD. but I do remember that the dynamics of the horns is much more impressive on the LP.
I bought the record at a local used vinyl store. One of his employees once told me [that besides the individually priced items in the front and the back room that were all $4. But could be had for $2 at there monthly sales, when everything was 50% off.] that the whole basement was full of used vinyl. He thought that they had close to a million records. They went out of business, now about 12 years ago. I always wondered what happened to the inventory. The hidden gems mixed in with the multiple copies of Boston and Meatloaf. If he could have hung in there, now he would be a popular place.
I bought quite a few good jazz records, that unfortunately were in just ok condition. And about half of them had some guys name written on the cover.
Here is a description of âFrancis A and Edward Kâ:
Recorded on Sinatraâs birthday in 1967, this collaboration between Americaâs most popular singing icon and pre-eminent jazz composer still endures as one of Sinatraâs most enjoyable Reprise-era albums. The Ellington Orchestra stretches out in style, with the five-man horn section (including trumpeter Cootie Williams and saxophonist Johnny Hodges) expertly counterpointing the Chairmanâs assured vocalizations.
I wanted to list those two records in the âin printâ thread, but noticed that they indeed are out of print since quite some time unfortunately.
Those were my first âaudiophileâ remasterings and I would have bought them alone for the gorgeous covers, if not the music was great, too!
Speakers Corner 180g remasters (I possibly can later add who mastered them)
Nice remembering the enthusiasm I felt when first looking at those shining covers and hearing the clean sound of the old recordings.
Perhaps, Iâm in the minority, but it seems that Cannonball is long overdue for some new releases on vinyl. Many of his records are hard to find.
This is by far the best Reference Recordings Jazz album available, in fact it is a strong general recommendation music wiseâŚand especially because it has a fantastically natural sound.
I guess if you can still find one of this release anywhere, it wonât even be too expensive. Get it fast!
I list this one because there are very few Fone albums only which I like. Many classical are a catastrophe in interpretation and many others sound not really good, thin to awfulâŚsome sound excellentâŚitâs an audiophile label, so more should sound like that imo.
The one here is not that long out of print, but still very hard to get and itâs great solo guitar, mostly kind of world music style with very good sound.
Looked for years for a vinyl copy of âThe Trinity Sessionâ by Cowboy Junkies and found oneâŚas it turns out, the Canadian version which did not include âBlue Moon (Song for Elvis)â which is one of the highlights of the recording.
Six months later I found an American one, good shape and paid dearly for it.
Six months later. It gets reissued on audiophile vinyl and SACD.
Edit: special reason is because it is a singular album that canât be remade. It was recorded, not manufactured.
Yeah, this is something to hateâŚitâs always good to keep an eye on the âannouncedâ sections of the big record sales shopsâŚoften then you know 6 months in advance whatâs upcoming
hello ;
interesting !!
My selft the kind of blue i listen to is the dsd download! I also have the mono 1959 needle drop made whit mono cartridge that i listen to one big speaker only (because it have on chanel only) soon i will play it whit my cassette player, im just looking for the best tape first!
I saw a complete new and sealed mono from 1959 for some month ago, is gone now!
I wish they did a 128 native dsd or a complete master tape to reel to reel format to sell.
i myselft prefer the 1959 mono vinyl (i had compare only to needle drops) only this classic i had not listen to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLdWUQIOfdg i belive is the one you say is the best?
Now i recommend you find a acetate kind of blue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXcI4-uSfDM
ps. you can try to find also a reel to reel version(but i guess that for other thread then) https://www.discogs.com/Miles-Davis-Kind-Of-Blue/release/5945124
good night
Yes the first YouTube is the one I mean.
Mostly needledrops have nothing to do with the potential of the vinyl versions. I often wonder that people with recordplayers of 250-500$ buy records costing as much to make needledrops. Most needledrops really sound limited.
I know needle drops are never like real live vinyl listen; but almost all my needle drops are from vinyl players over 2000 dollars and whit other expensiv stuff like the worlds most expensiv cartridges, koetsu etc the total cost can be over 50000 just in vinyl, cartridge, arm, vinyl amp etc etc
I have these needle drops because some of these vinyls are too expensive or you can not find.
Thatâs fine!
thank you
ps. when you say out of print; you mean lps that you can not find right now to buy?
I mean records that are not available anymore as regular new items in the shops / discontinued.
Some of them might be available on eBay or Discogs at higher prices than initially or if youâre lucky as remainers in shops, but canât be ordered anymore. Others have gone forever and demand insane prices on eBay.
