Pre-loaded on the card but not on the Red until it is inserted. As the Red is capable of operating on any of the OS’ that work on a Rasberry Pi they provide you with theirs but you could use many others if you chose to.

I agree the manual is not very explicit or thorough and makes assumptions about previous knowledge plus it is being translated from Chinese. As new owners have found out here recently with the Mk II manuals are not written by actual users but by copy writers so not intuitive.
Looks good Scott. Should just have to log in, update and check the right boxes.

Do you use Roon or HQP or just JRiver?
Roon and JRMC, sometimes Qobuz and Tidal without Roon.
Which option would you guess I should choose from this screen shot below? I have access to most file resolutions and could use any of the Red’s output options, but I am under the impression I2S is supposed to be a good, if not the best choice, for the DS DAC MK I.
For the purpose of the Mk I I would stick with I2S and then try USB or AES later if you have cables. For the DSD choice I would try both and see if you can here a difference. Seems to me like Ted thinks there is no difference if I am remembering correctly. If you are not going to use HQP or Squeeze I would turn them off though. I have tried Tidal Connect in the past but always went back to the original method. Play with the different options and see what you hear as they give you plenty of choices.
How did it do with the updates?
Only indicated/took one…
Going to run upstairs and see if I can make some music…
Thanks for all of the help so far.
What cables are you using in the first image?
-
Wireworld Starlight CAT 8 Ethernet
-
Pink faun LAN Isolator
-
Revelation Audio Labs I2S
-
Core Power Technologies Diamond Extreme PC

Very nice!
Smooth sailing so far?
Yes, Sir.
Thanks again for your time.
Not sure its an upgrade though…initial impression is that the overall sound has dulled a bit. Good resolution but a general softness and emphasis of the lower frequencies that I don’t particularly care for. It just seems a bit “muddy”.
Since a couple of power cable changes accompanied the installation, I am going to try and reverse those and see what I think after I get some miles on the kit.
Also going to look into putting some thing(s) under the Holo Red (footers and such) to see if that makes any difference.
I’ll report back later after I have had plenty of listening time.
Cheers.
Kind of sounds like what I heard when I put the Zen Stream and the new LPS in last Spring. I let it play music 24/7 for a week and the character changed quite a bit. I didn’t change any cables though just the streamer and LPS. Sliding the Bridge out should help too and it’s easy to slide back in. I’ll get my shot at it tomorrow and I suspect out of the box it won’t beat the Zen until it’s broken in.
