Thanks I’ll take a look at trying Silly Putty.
Has anyone seen a rebuttal or reply from Onzow regarding JR Bosclair’s assertion that the Onzow leaves a residue on the stylus?
Never did see a reply. I think many decided it was an inside play for buying/selling usb-microscopes used in the process of revealing stylus gunk.
I use a flux, but still mix in an onzow clean here and there — to satisfy my rebellious tendencies.
They did reply in a recent comment at Analog Planet: https://www.analogplanet.com/comment/584959#comment-584959
My Onzow is back out of the drawer.
I had a Linn Krystal when they were newly released. After about 200 hours of use, the cantilever collapsed in the middle of a side.
There were other similar failures reported, and Linn investigated. Their conclusion was that, in spite of the fact that they had not warned against using liquid stylus cleaners, owners were responsible for their own failures for having used liquid stylus cleaners instead of Linn’s emery paper.
I had not used liquid cleaners, but I had applied Stylast at installation. They rejected my warranty claim.
The silver lining is that I discovered Lyra as a consequence (I also went back to VPI TTs for a while, but eventually returned to Linn). Lyra includes a cleaning brush, and a bottle and brush of their own proprietary stylus treatment. I have to say that I really like the Lyra system, from entry level Delos through the Etna level. I’ve not tried the mighty Atlas.
Regarding Peter Lederman’s recommendations of the blue tack, I occasionally use it. But … it scares me with the cantilever fixing on the Etna. I am very careful to maintain control of the cuing lever to avoid getting beyond the tip into the putty.
