How Important are Digital Cables?

Thank you, you are in for a very pleasant surprise.

I have several different brands of SPDIF cables and I think here, like Ethernet cables, I lack the ability to hear differences. I loaned all of them to a forum member, and he thought he could hear differences. Hmmmm. But last I heard, he and I both trust Stealth’s best. No need to ponder if a change would be interesting. I’m done buying audio gear. I’m thinking of getting back into pistachios.

Ethernet cables offered the least difference to me too, but I did hear a difference between Omega and Muon Pros System cable. So, I hope I’ll hear an improvement from Omega-X.

I have never had a SPDIF cable since I only use I2S and USB. This cable offers me a science experiment; to compare to AQ Dragon48 in PMG512, and between the two DACs I have. Hopefully I’ll hear a difference. Since it doesn’t decode SACD, I’ll not use it often.

I’m done with components, but there seem to be no end to the cable and tweak side yet:man_shrugging:

How many ā€œl’m doneā€ does one get? It’s usually not a single event. I don’t know who makes cables for Network Accoustic but switching out theirs for Steath was an improvement. Even their soon to be released ā€œultimateā€ Ethernet cable fell short for me.
So, yes, sometimes the differences in digital cables are subtle, but when you hear it, you can’t deny it.

ā€œUltimateā€ fell short? Good, one less cable to worry about.

Once Omega-X is here, I’ll move the original Omega to upstream of the switch to see if there’s better synergy in the chain. Maybe I can remove another filter there.

I can definitely hear the difference the SR Galileo Discovery Ethernet cable put between the Muon Pro and my streamer in my system. It brings out more micro detail and presence than all my previous cables. I believe it’s competitive to the Omega. Once you hear it, you don’t want to take it out. As for USB cables, between my streamer and Dac, the Valhalla 2 which is competitive to the Omega, is the sweetspot of USB cables. Can you get even better performance, yes. For more money, the ChordMusic gives you even more resolution, and the best I’ve heard is without a doubt the rediculously priced MasterBuilt USB cable. But the difference between the MB and ChordMusic is not that big and I don’t feel it’s worth the money for it. After all, cables are just tweaks and putting more money into the major components are more important to the overall sound.

Cables of all types have run the gamut for me. Often there seems to be little difference, or, as you say, may not be worth the cost differential. Other times, cables have been a component grade improvement, which often includes component level spending.
I’ve long abandoned the idea that certain product categories are ā€œoverpricedā€. It only matters if the juice is worth the squeeze, as they say. The rest lies in how to get the thing you now can’t live without.

One could borrow cables when people go on vacation, lol.

I wish Al were my neighbor!

All cables make difference, some types are more than the others. Even though to my ears USB makes more difference than ethernet, I do not have use of USB anymore. Ethernet is about the only cable I need for streaming. Like Straightwire says, once your system is at a certain level, you just want to squeeze more juice out of it.

He is not my neighbor.

That is why my streaming of files outperform my SACD player. The processing of noise and distortion with the high quality switch box and ultra high end cables and filters, and the ability to play quad rate outperforms the fiber P-link of my SACD player.

Not mine either, and i am not sure if that is a bad thing. I am already heavily influenced by Al from a few thousand miles away.

Borrowing nice gear and nice cables can be dangerous for my wallet.

It is a rabbit hole with no ending! DSD256 files have matched the performance of SACD last year, then PMG SACD and 512 showed up. Now SACDs sound better again. So, I need to find ultra high end cable to upgrade my streaming. Hopefully Omega-x plus Omega are enough, or I need something else later. :woman_shrugging:

It is a never ending journey. Have fun.

Front Row Reserve???

The FRR is an incredible interconnect, I have three pairs of excellent IC before. But FRR is superior by a large margin. I do not know how does it compares to a $20k+ XLR, but this maybe the best $5k XLR I have heard. I mean it is way better than my last $2k IC.

I may get another pair later, but there is a power cord I am eyeing too.

That ā€œsomething elseā€ could be a wired approach to streaming and not wireless.
A Muon Pro/Stealth/Tempus/Stealth chain feeds my DAC. It sounds good and rivals the PMG SACD. Just saying.
To be honest, though, I haven’t tried the wireless approach. Don’t want to burst my bubble just yet.

With regular CDs they are much closer to each other. But SACD playing through PMG SACD and 512 brought the SQ to a higher level. I have played the same DSD purchased files from Qobuz also, and PMG combo again sounds better in my system.
