I have been listening to RVG recordings that span from the earliest like the Gil Melle to some of the very last like the last he did with Houston Person and his sound did evolve in phases over the years so this one DOES sound like an RVG recording to me.
I’m a huge fan of Barney Wilen and have collected all I can find of his–which varies from his early Sonny Rollins like sound to the mature style of his that embraced a lighter more Lester Young sound and grace and the in-between of rock-jazz (more rock than jazz-rock to my ears) and avant garde experimentation. He was the son of an American businessman with a French woman and he was blessed to not HAVE to perform and record so he did so less than many. And in a sense that makes his recordings a bit more “special” and most are excellent.
Rudy contributed so much to jazz not only by the recordings but by providing a sort of safe space for many (very few didn’t “get along” with Rudy) and by setting a standard of recording that many looked up to and strove to meet or better.
