Thanks for the link to the article. I’ll read it and my wife will probably leave me and find someone who has a life. And as to your theory about my ears making up for visual deficiencies, well I wish that were true, but when I read what people say about openness and sound stage and clarity and space between instruments, I often struggle to dream that I might be able to really hear it. But that’s what’s fun about it for me.

Well, conventional wisdom aside, the single most important requirement for discerning changes in a resolving Hi-Fi system is a great recording of a performance you enjoy and are very familiar with. Poor recording engineering and poor transfers of music to media will yield a poor performance in your listening room no matter how much your power cables cost 
(in my experience).

Another “budget” option
I use the Infinity series to my DAC and transport and quite enjoy them. they are a level or two above the Black Magic in the $800 range
