'I Like the Music, But Not the Musician'

I think it’s healthy for me to air my political views at our american hosts occasionally

Edit - of course I could be wrong (about it being healthy, not the other stuff, I’m dead right about the evils of capitalism  )

I could really care less about one’s political views. Where I take offense when I plunk down my money to hear/see them play music and they intend to ram their views down our throats. Quite a few artists I liked have been guilty of this, and I refuse to buy their wares from that point on.

Phil Collins.
Have we done him yet?
Brilliant drummer, pretty great frontman, turned in a few good acting jobs,
and some of his solo music was good too.

Problem?
Well, it’s probably petty, but I saw them in 1982 (ABACAB tour).
And he and they turned in a really great performance, including Suppers Ready (there’s even some shaky cam corder footage on YT from the gig!).
But… he spent a significant part of his talky bits between tracks dissing the early genesis stuff, described it as “schitte” several times, and generally acted like a prat.
…and then would do a blinding rendition of said tracks he said were, er, rubbish.

Just seemed off. And odd.

I hope he finds some respite from his painful conditions stopping him drumming though, he was very good indeed - especially with Chester Thompson drumming too

This is unfortunate. This behavior sucks the joy out of attending a concert.

Always respect and be kind to your audience.

Well that would have been my expectation.
Could have had a particularly off night I suppose.

That’s fair, he is entitled to an off night, musicians are people too.

Cobain insulting and mocking the audience in Argentina by cutting ‘Seems like…’ , deliberately, many times became sort of a cult classic.

I am huge fan of Van Morrison’s earlier work (e.g., pre-1983) and I consider Astral Weeks one of the best rock albums of all time. More recently, though, Van has descended into the anti-vax and antisemitic netherworlds. I will continue to listen to the Van Morrison recordings I own, but I will not purchase any new ones.

Yes, Van’s later works, anything after Veedon Fleece to these ears don’t do it for me. Don’t line-up with his current world views or antivax/antisemetic views either. Referering to a comment ELK posted today, why do I get the notion that Van has become a sports fan of late?

I do not understand why Van Morrison, Eric Clapton and Roger Waters have so much hate in them. They are (or were) super-talented, have more money than they can spend, have adoring fans all over the world, and enjoy lifestyles most people can only dream of. Van Morrison’s net worth is estimated at $90 million USD. Not bad for a musician who complains about shadowy figures ‘owning the media.’

Yes, they overflow with privilege. My guess is cocaine induced paranoia-psychosis. For me there are currently many better options, that is regarding recently released music.

Yep, that’s my feeling.

I’ve replaced some of my older Van CD’s that were scratched or damaged back in the day (finding them in the used bin at my local shop) but I’ve no interest in his current diatribe.

The other day I listened to “A Night in San Francisco,” which was recorded live in 1994, I believe. Good Lord that guy could put together a monster band.

Oddly, I didn’t see @aangen slice of cake icon once yesterday. But I see it was his cake day on his profile.

Happy Belated Cake Day Al!

To suggest Van Morrison is anti-semitic because of the title of one of his songs “They own the media” is big stretch and sounds rather conspiratorial to me.

It is not just the title, but the lyrics to the song, “They Own the Media,” as well as another song – “They Sold Me Out.”

Not sure who you think is conspiring with whom, but hey, you do you.

This thread for the most part is a around about way of hinting at things that were deemed taboo by the powers that over see this forum, with no way of countering some of the misinformation without being reprimanded or banned.

Imo it should have remained closed.

I identified three musicians whose music I enjoy (Waters, Clapton, Morrison) but whom I dislike for reasons I detailed with supporting web links. I also noted how I deal with this dilemma, e.g., by listening to ROIO’s (unofficial concert recordings) and not buying additional music by the artists in question.

Forum members highlighted additional artists they find troubling for one reason or another. Everyone is free to participate (or not) and to agree or disagree with the posted sentiments.

I do not see a reason or need to close this thread, which has generated interesting discussion that has caused me to consider or reconsider my views on certain artists. But if the powers that be decide the thread should be closed then so be it, and thanks to all who participated in the discussion.
