Hi everyone, I was wondering peoples opinion on using something like the below for a JRIVER music server
I would probably have an external usb connected ssd to hold the music files. It’s very cheap and hopefully would not be too electrically noisy as the processor is low spec.
If you’re just going to use it for music and/or streaming, it should be fine. A lot does depend upon what operating system you plan to use and what you plan to stream.
If using Windows, you could Debloat windows of all the garbage and telemetry settings that they pack into their OS, thereby making it somewhat more efficient and less noisy. If you want to take it even further, you could go into the bios and run a few tweaks to make it even better. Much of that, I believe, is dependent upon the bios interface options that comes with the NUC.
You could even pose those questions to ChatGPT and see what suggestion it might have. But, remember to always verify whatever it presents through other sources .
My experience with JRiver is that it if you don’t do heavy upsampling it is a pretty easy load in terms of CPU and RAM usage. My guess is that that machine would be fine. I agree with DuneKidd’s suggestion to debloat Windows if you go that route - that said though it’s not going to make a massive difference.
Thanks. I can’t believe how cheap these things are. Fully functioning windows 11pro machine for £200. My current 10 year old nuc, which I think is slower than the above cost me £900 back in the day
