Is it live, or is it WTF?

HDTT, but it was the DSD64 version at Paul’s, if I remember correctly.
I listen to the DSD256 at home

In your estimation is there a huge difference in sound comparing the DSD64 and the DSD256, of course accounting for system differences.

I have heard minor differences on some occasions, but cannot use fancy descriptors, and I like to use fancy descriptors, lol

That is baaaaaad. But oh so true.

Thanks, you are confirming my suspicions.

And send pictures of food…

You forgot Tape. HDTT sells Reel to Reel Tape. This may be a danger to me. I have everything I need now to use my new Tape Deck. I am afraid.

Didn’t realize they were offering tape. Hmmm…

HDTT, High Definition Tape Transfer?
I might be wrong about them selling tape. I could be just wishing they would.

No, I think the “tape” part in their name is about what they use as a source.

I’ve doubled down on vinyl, and as such don’t pay too much attention to digital, or tape for that matter. I’m sure HDTT is fine but, as I said…

Hey, just want to thank you for linking me to the article “Does a 1956 Recording Really…” And based on his description (and your mention), I downloaded (in wimpy 96/24) the Stravinsky L’Histoire du Soldat recording. Wow, what a fantastic experience. It’s such a perfect blend of presence, live-ness, close-ness, soundstage imaging. I found myself not as much in the audience as on stage with the musicians. In college I toyed with the idea of being a pro trumpet player, and I was taken aback by the playing of David Jandorf - it is much more “out there” than you’d hear in a typical recording of this piece - it bordered on “blatty” - but considering the piece and the recording, it was just more revealing and “naked”. I found some of the other instruments, like the violin, to be along the same lines. I guess the best word is “exposed” or “intimate”. The other thing I’m noticing about these 1950s / early 60s stereo recordings is the DEPTH of soundstage. I can distinctly place them not only from left to right here, but in a semi-circle. Fantastic.

You are welcome. Glad you liked that 1956 recording! That recording certainly does “pop” and, as you noted, the soundstage is outstanding. This is one of the best of the bunch for these particular characteristics, imo. But, there are many many more superb classical recordings from this “Golden Age of Stereo,” circa late '50s to the end of the 60s. The sound stage captured in many of these is simply mind expanding.

I found an excellent R2R resource online that stated HDTT did at one time sell tapes and gave a link that was no longer present on the HDTT website.

RP does great reviews. Feels like a friend advising you. Trust him.

Link bookmarked. Thanks. So we’re in the presence of royalty here? Great, now I’m nervous about my sloppy and frequently inept comments. Oh well, back in my former life as a wine aficionado I was really involved with the Wine Forum on Compuserve. My taste buds then were about as good as my ears now, so when I made a similar self-deprecating remark there, someone asked, “you know what the difference is between a wine specialist and a wine drinker? A specialist THINKS about it and tries to figure it out, that’s all.” So I guess that might fly for audiophiles, too.

In terms of wine evaluation, there are even more ego and personal tastes involved. I stayed as a wine drinker and be happy🍷

I found out there’s a third level of wine appreciation, and getting to that level almost destroyed my life. At least with audio fanaticism there aren’t chemicals involved! All the other symptoms of addiction can sure apply though - isolation, ignoring one’s family, being an a$$hole…

I wouldn’t worry. From the short time I’ve been here, just be polite and have fun.

Compuserve??? Dude, that’s all the way back from way before altavista isn’t it?
