Not worth it? Just wait until I can afford something better?
Never mind - didnāt know there was a new one by the same name
I will have to play that tune too. And my Yamaha does play really good. So why not?
I ended up selling my PS Audio DAC and transport when I realized they were not going to support SACD long term. After all of the videos from Paul on SACD and DSD it was hard to stomach to be honest. Iām keeping my Bryson DAC which support DSD over HDMI and have several universal players. If they change their mind I may reconsider going back.
Iāve just seen a review of a new high-end Pro-ject CD transport. A brand new top-loading design with the help of ex-Phillips engineers they acquired. The intention is to sell the mechanism to other manufacturers given the declining manufacturer base for disc spinners.
It also has an I2S output. PSA compatiable?
They also have a new DAC/pre-amp/headphone unit with I2S input.
Does the transport outputHD from SACD? Donāt be silly, what a bizarre idea.
If I recall correctly, PS Audio have decided on the optical mechanism (built in Japan) but they havenāt mentioned whoās it is. Iād be very surprised if they went for a top loader over a tray/slot loader.
Just mentioning there is another i2s option and asking if PSA compatible. It also seems well priced for a serious piece of hardware.
What makes you think weāre not going to continue supporting SACD?
The drive is indeed from Japan and made by a company specifically for D and M holdings who own Marantz and Denon.
I think what I said is that without Oppo we didnāt have a way to support SACD but weād keep trying. At one point we had given up until the opportunity to get a drive we could use came up. I know that sharing inside information as it happens can cause people
to go one way or the other, then get confused, then get back on track.
Probably should not discuss anything outside the company until the targets stop moving, but thatās never been my style.
Which I, for one, find to be great fun. ![]()
Frankly, Paul, that makes perfect sense. Itās probably the same drive as in the Marantz SA-10 that I referred to above and I assume is the best OEM drive available, as it was designed primarily for audio rather than video. They explain that the problem was drives being primarily for video in recent years. So they had to go make their own audio drive.
If this is the case, itās very good news.
Itās also nice of D+M (USA owned now) to sell it, but Pro-Ject plan on doing the same, presumably to defray some of the $m+ development costs.
dCS had the same problem and released a unit that did not play SACD, something they hadnāt done for about 20 years, now fixed. But then to my ears 16/44 on dCS makes HD music streams moot.
Marantz sacd-m3 transport mechanism ā¦looks pretty substantial!

Iām with Elk, itās fun to follow the bouncing ball. Just make sure you include the appropriate caveats that [insert device] is a moving target and subject to (radical?) change. Helps save some grief. Witness the AN-3 saga ā¦
A constructive suggestion indeed.
Explicitly reminding everyone all product descriptions are subject to change - perhaps drastically - should decrease the angst experienced by some here.
Nah. We love our angst here. As Nirvana sang āTeenage angst has paid off wellā¦ā
Last year customer service said the new transport would not support SACD. Has this changed?
See aboveā¦
My humble take, you have to present in a way thatās honest to yourself regardless of the consequences (thatās what Paul is all about). Plus, itās fun to see how the sausage is made. Weāre all here enjoying the ride.
Buy a $50,000 Esoteac and it will spin your disks, make your morning coffee and complement your dashing good looksā¦
Just buy it. You NEED one.
