It Works ! - Sony UBP-X1000ES HDMI "Audio" output to Chinese I2S Adapter Board to DS Sr. I2S Input

Ok, I think I’m good to go order me some items. Thanks!

Hi!
I have a Sony X800M2 and a Sabaj D5 DAC. After I removed R47 from the green board Sabaj become unable to show the real sample rate. When I added the blue board I get a lot of noise. I have noticed that on my green board R35 is missing by default. Any suggestion? Thank you!

I have a concern about this product:) The product has a single 24MHz oscillator that is typically not associated with proper 44.1 or 48 kHz PCM conversion to i2s. For proper conversion from these sample rate families you need 22.5792MHz and 24.576MHz oscillators. As such, these boards will cause jitter at their output. Anyway, if they can update the design it would be a nice product.

My board is an older revision. The new boards have the HDMI in & out swapped. I friend of mine bought the new boards and I did the mods before I found out that the resistor removal was no longer necessary. DSD works great on both the reversed the not reversed outputs (blue board) but no PCM output I think because I incorrectly removed the resistor. But it only worked so far with the PS Audio DirectStream Sr. & Denafrips Terminator DAC’s. It did not work with my friends LKS DAC at all. Same noise problems as you are experiencing with the Sabaj D35

Fair enough but then why does it work flawlessly on two different DAC’s ? (please see my response below).

I’m not commenting on the DAC issue…just the board itself.

I don’t know the board but there are pretty good quality fractional multiply/fractional divide clock converters/generators from multiple vendors (TI, SiLabs, IDT, …). You only need +/- 100ppm accuracy so you probably don’t need the more expensive versions which have ridiculously accurate conversions. (You can also use a jitter cleaner…)
I liked the sound from an analog VCXO better than the more “accurate” digital synthesis when I implemented both years ago.

So am I correct to conclude that the Sony UBP-X800M2 -> to the I2S board-> to my Cocktail Audio X40 via Coax or Toslink is the trick to SACD audio? My research indicates so but perhaps a 2nd opinion before I convert my Canadian $ to yen…

Sony HDMI 1 out ----> HDMI In (adapter board) ----> I2S Out (adapter board) —> I2S input of PS Audio DAC (Denafrips works too) but other DAC’s I2S inputs are a crapshoot - e.g LKS didn’t work). On the Sony, set the HDMI out to “Auto”

ha, you’ve reminded me of VXOs in my radio days - crystal osc being pulled a few kHz either way from its resonant frequency (by a capacitor o cross it if i recall? i’ll have to go look it up) in order to cover most of an amateur band with one expensive crystal
before frequency synthesis made an appearance!

Thanks. rajugsw. Now to SACD shopping I go… Eye on Breakfast In America (in hopes it is far better mastered than the original)or Talk Talk, Genesis, Roxy Music, Toto… primarily my objective is merely to find a SACD for LESS than I paid for the player…! Yikes! Some of these on Amazon range from $150 - $700!

Update one year later :

Bought new adapters cause something went wrong with the original boards (thx to PS Audio for the Speedy check of my I2S inputs - no fault found).

The main board came in today

(top center in the photo below) and the channel reversal board about 3 weeks ago. You save $10 by ordering the no box option which is what I needed even though the lead time is longer without a box.

I’ve decided to permanently integrate the boards inside my Sony UBP-X1000ES. I never use the built in DAC and the Optical won’t do 192/24 into the DSSr… Everything fits like a glove but I have to get the air blower tomorrow morning cause there’s lots of metal dust inside and I don’t want to short circuit anything.

Once I clean the box, I just have to find 5VDC from the beefy Power Supply to power the two boards. PCM I2S from the main board (black PCB) and channel correct DSD/SACD playback from the blue boards (bottom right where the old Cheezy Sony internal DAC used to be.

Joe what an amazing trip for this unknowledge to follow. Please keep posting I enjoy following.

Thanks, man. Just got everything running this morning. So nice not to have a “kludgefest” behind the player including that oversized switching chrome box switching power supply.

Final wiring shown below (forgot a GND wire - yet it still worked :joy:). Added the GND wire (not shown) from the Adapter board to Chassis.

And here’s the old Sony DAC DSD256 capable but no where near the sound quality of the DirectStream Sr. DAC.

Thanks for the encouragement. I just bought the box. We shall see how it all works. Just look for the DSD signal on my SGCD display?

You bet Mike.

I think you mentioned yours is a Sony UBP-X800 ? If so, make sure it’s HDMI is set to “Auto”. Use HDMI Out #2 into you HDMI Video to I2S adapter. Then another HDMI cable from the I2S out into your SGCD’s I2S input. Make sure that the 3 position switch on the Adapter Board is not set in the “TV” position or center position of the switch. When you want to use your SOny player to watch Netflix/Hulu/Amazon, change the HDMI setting for :“Auto” to “HDMI 1”. Just remember to set it back to “Auto” the next time you play a disc.

Thanks. Fingers crossed. If it doesn’t work, I’m not out that much.

Mike

I will be curious to see if it can successfully strip the DSD signal from an old Oppo DVD player I have lying around as well. For $50 it’s worth experimenting.

It should work Mike. Did you order a 5VDC power supply/wall wart for it. This one from Amazon will work and it’s cheap.

I collect adapters but I’ll check. I already got a delay email so this isn’t a rush. Thanks for the hand-holding. I’m a babe in the woods here.
