My 2nd JL Audio f113 v1 now has the dreaded hum. About 2 years ago I removed the amplifier from my 1st f113 v1 and sent it to JL Audio and still works flawlessly.
I recently found out that JL Audio no longer does the repairs. With that being said. Would removing the amplifier from the humming f113 v1 and connecting it straight to my PS Audio BHK300 mono amp be possible?
I didn’t realize JL Audio joined the ever growing list of companies sold to investor owned entities. I’ve had to rebuild my F112 V1 at JL Audio’s repair center twice now. With their new owner’s policy to no longer offer repair support for discontinued products, I’ll never buy another one from JL Audio again.
I noticed their website says they may offer online support and repair parts for older versions. You could try calling them and see if they have any ideas for repairing your sub.
I did reach out to JL Audio and received the below response. It’s very disappointing
Thank you for reaching out. I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble with your f113. Unfortunately, since you last reached out, repairs and replacement parts for v1 Fathoms have been discontinued. We do have an article available that lists the relevant caps to replace that will take care of the few issues we see in older v1 Fathoms (linked below). You would need to find a local repair shop or someone with soldering skills to have this done.
Yes, that’s disappointing. I remember seeing an illustrated article some time ago on DIY repair of the F series subs and the biggest hurdle is getting the sealed cabinets open. I’m sure the factory has jigs that make the separation process easier.
The second series of F subs is getting along in years now, one wonders how long it will be before those are also unsupported.
