KEF, Focal, Megnepan, B&W, Sonus Faber, which brand is better suited for piano and orchestrative music?

How would you describe the “behind the speaker” image placement in general?

Thanks

My son swears by his LS50 in terms of transparency, tonal quality, frequency response and imaging. I guess what you need is a larger speaker with these attributes plus accurate low-frequency reproduction, which is a big ask. I’ve used Harbeth SHL5s for years - these get close but I’d like another lower octave. I have similar musical tastes to yours. How big is your room? Harbeth 40.3 XD would be a good choice. You’d probably have to manage the room/speaker interaction to flatten the low-frequency response.
As noted above Darren Myers has stated on another thread here that he uses Harbeth speakers for voicing PS Audio speakers.
Happy listening!

Wow, lots of good information! Thanks to everyone who responded. I’m ruling out Magies at the moment due to their looks which is unfortunate.

Harbeth 40.3 is out of my price range, and the classical look is an issue for me. I personally like how it looks but you all know how it goes…

Sounds like similar to the new Kef metas?

davida, do you know of a good sub that will blend well with the K2s in case I need one? I hope not.

I think you got the wrong David…

Agree with you on the looks of the Maggie’s. The 20.7s were like having 2 LeBron James in your room. Not sure where you live but the smaller MBL speakers like the MBL 120 are possibly in your price range used. I picked up used MBL 120s for 11k. Amazing resolution and bass down to 35hz. They are the reason I sold my Maggie’s. They have much more bass than any monitor speaker it size.

Thinking it over consider the Rythmic subwoofers…

But in my living situation given the proximity of my neighbors,
a sub would not be wise…my Aria 948s dig deep enough to satisfy
and not abuse my neighbors…they have been very gracious with me.

Best wishes friend

@minnesotafats,

Great setup! REL subs, I’m looking into them as well, and is that the #7 track out the window?

That is the Washington avenue bridge by the University of Minnesota.

Late to this party, but Maggies do magic like few other transducers when reproducing a large orchestra. IF, that is, your room can accommodate them and you don’t mind dealing with the unique challenges of dipole speakers.

Oh, for a sec I could almost swear it’s somewhere I frequent in NY.

I agree with this hthaller. Whatever it is - they seem to bring a presence. Maybe it’s their sheer size and dipole nature (20.7) I went to seethe DSO play Tchaikovsky’s 4th i believe… went home and put it on and the accuracy was pretty amazing.

I recently upgraded to Sonus Faber’s Olympica Nova 3. Still waiting for them to be delivered. Existing speakers are Focal Chorus 826V. I find them to be a bit bright. Had my eyes on auditioning the Focal Sopra 2 but no nearby dealer and with the substantial increase in price decided on SF. Primary listening is jazz and classical. I do intend to run them with my subs. If you get the opportunity do audition them.

If I had to name the two most important characteristics of a setup or parts of it for piano reproduction, it would be the combination of rich/big enough sound to cover its lower registers and don’t let the higher sound too thin but ensuring the right overtones and the best micro and macro dynamics you can get. One of those two (big sound and dynamics) without the other won’t work that well. Then comes transparency.

I’m just listening to a gorgeous Tacet recording, which especially features exceptional transparency (accompanying the great music).

Just curious what front end you are running with the Focals?

Thanks for Sharing the album, will give it a try tomorrow, I play the piano myself so, if the recording doesn’t sound right I’m very sensitive to it, but I have found a brute force solution and that is with REL subs.

Very nice, I am certain you will enjoy them… Also, they are a beautiful speaker.

PsAudio DSD Sr dac, BHK preamp and M700 amps. A pair of REL subs are in the mix as well.

Yes they are. Both sound and aesthetics are important to me. Thanks for recommending Mick at Quintessence Audio to me.

I assumed you purchased at Ultra Fidelis, with Jonathon, no?
