Listening to DSD 256

Is there a way to listen to them without buying PSA equipment?

Playback does not require any specialized equipment.

See here for formats currently available:

FYI.

At this time I am streaming from my Mac through a Node 2 into my DSD. This would limit it to 44k 16bit which is what I always get with streaming. How can I listen to these higher resolutions. I do have the Bridge II.

If you download the higher resolution files and stream them on your network to your Bridge II/DirectStream Sr. DAC combo, you will be able to listen to them.

Not sure what I am missing here…?

Cheers.

Sorry all this is new to me. What plays the hi-res files? The Mac or the Bridge? Do I somehow run a LAN wire from the Mac to the Bridge or will the Bridge handle it all?

Files need to be on your network.

Bridge needs to be on your network.

LAN/Ethernet cable needs to connect the Bridge to your network.

The Bridge is not a Wi-Fi (wireless) device.

You will need a network Player/Controller that can find your files and render them to the Bridge.

The Player/Controller software will allow you to use an application as a remote control to play your files or you can control them from a computer so long as your computer has access to the Player/Controller software and your files.

This will help you with some of the basics:

Are you using any music management software (on your MAC or otherwise)?

Not that I know of. Will the Node 2 work as a player/controller?

Read the Bridge manual.

That will get you familiar with the basics.

The Bridge is a an internal source to feed music to the DAC just like the Node 2 is a source. Think of the Bridge as a streamer and DAC input combination. The Node 2 is a streamer which outputs to a different DAC input.

I’m thinking I don’t have the knowledge to listen to hi-res music unless I buy a SACD player. 75yo here.

If you can use the Node 2, you should be able to use the Bridge.

IMO.

I will. Thank you.

Can you recommend any for the Mac?

JRiver media center?

I have JRiver Media Center and Roon.

I tend to use Roon to explore new music and love the “Roon Radio” feature for that.

I tend to use JRiver Media Center to listen to my files even though Roon can do the same.

How do you manage your files currently with the Node 2?

@ELK, would you mind moving the latest, related posts in this thread to an appropriate spot in the “Network Audio” section of the forum so @SCB can benefit from others more knowledgeable than/in addition to me?

TIA

Thanks ELK.

The Bridge2 cannot play DSD256 without converting it to less.
An $800 Eversolo DMP-A6 can play DSD256 through its internal DAC without compromise. I believe the MK1 DAC can only play DSD256 through its USB interface. Maybe using its I2S interface.

Where you are now system-wise DSD256 is not something you should reach for.

Scott1, you maybe need to let this one go.

Thanks. I am now realizing this. Just wanted to try the higher resolutions other than 44/16.

The DMP-A6 is a nice little machine. It will play up to DSD512.

Playing DSD256 is challenging for a lot of systems. The Eversolo DMP-A6 is the cheapest and most troublefree way to get there using its Internal DAC. I have many very expensive DACs and I find the A6 DAC fine for my use. The A6 is a streamer and DAC, and it is also a Roon endpoint if you are interested in such things. It is available on Amazon. It’s a cheap and nice place to start. You can add a 4TB M2 drive to it easily. There is a small hatch on the bottom you open with one screw. Install the M2 drive, which I paid like $130 for, and you can store quite a bit of music on. It has no issues playing DSD256 without any downsampling or conversions.

If you wish, send me a private message and we can chat on the phone if you wish.
