Miles Davis, if I build a playlist, what will it include? kindly asking for help

Good Day,

Newbies ?: I always have problem getting in Miles music, so I am asking for Help to discover him:

Here it is, I like Miles Davis, I like his smooth songs [Kind of blue], but I don’t know much of all the others album he did, so to discover more Miles, what are the track you would suggest to a newbies discovering Miles Davis, of courses, there is Kind of Blue, but what are the others, you would suggest?

So if I have to build a playlist, what are the songs, I should include?

I am guessing with your help, it will be faster than, listening all her album? or maybe not?

Thanks for Helping

PS

Since all streaming service is random music and playlist, it about time I build some for when I am driving my car!

I think you would really like “1958” . . . several versions available, the best sounding is the latest SACD release, the Japanese cd versions sound really good, I don’t have vinyl versions to compare.

Some covers of the “1958” release:

Some of the material first appeared as one side of this LP, with the soundtrack by MIles with Barney Wilen to “Lift to the Scaffold” on the other side:

As I know you like some big band, the collaborations with Gil Evans are all remarkable in my opinion.

Wow, that’s a hard question to answer without knowing what you enjoy listening to most.
I would suggest the albums that are included in the newly re-released box set of the “Prestige” albums. But that’s my taste.
I just don’t like Miles’ entry (late 60’s/early 70’s) into the jazz/rock/fusion style.
The earlier in his career, the better for me.

I would start with the albums Agharta and Pangaea, which contain the February 1, 1975 afternoon and evening concert performances at Osaka, Japan’s Festival Hall, respectively.

(Just kidding! These two albums from Miles’ ‘electric period’ can be a tough listen.)

Understanding Miles catalog is like examining the history of jazz…. it is all over the place. I’m with RonP, the earlier the better. Try Birth of the Cool… pretty darn accessible IMO. Then any record with John Coltrane… like Relaxin’/Steamin’/Cookin’/Workin’ with ….. My favorites. But heck… Miles is a journey. I am also not afraid to say I really dislike his move to funk and more modern (at the time) sound such as Bitches Brew (I really can’t take that record).

Good luck.

Birth of the Cool is a brilliant, creative album.

Here’s one more I think you might like Old One: “Blue Moods”

It’s a favorite, and it’s a little unconventional, a Teddy Charles album more or as much as a Miles album. That’s not a bad thing!

If you consider Kind of Blue smooth jazz, you are on the wrong track.

His first regular quintet, on Prestige, through the first few albums of the second quintet with Kind of Blue, Seven Steps to Heaven and a few others were my sweet spot. And that’s a mighty big sweet spot!

And if you’re not familiar with Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions, their reissues are reliable high quality, flat, quiet new vinyl. In my opinion, they most often sound better than original pressings.

Sadly, only vinyl available is 120$ CAD on Azon! it is a mobile, but too much for my pension plan!

But cheaper on Acoustic, 40$US (70CAD$) + shipping!

thanks again! will stream that!

Understand, Herbie Handcock, did the same!

Sorry, I always, forget to edit my previous post instead to multiply post as requested in this forum! when multiple answer! So I cancel and cut/paste hiere
