MKII to PMG Trade Up Price

Surely, other manufacturers introduce new products better than their old ones, some of which are discontinued or lose new developments in the process. Isn’t this the norm?

it is the “norm” but was not expected for this unit so soon. They released early and many early adopters where there to help them get their first what I would call production version out there. And then basically one upgrade soon after that, and then poof..sorry Ted quite and we have this new one. So the whole concept of the device was canned. Not just the device. I get it, they have a business, but it really was sold on the idea double the space we will be doing many upgrades..etc etc.. NOPE. Just wish they did better on the trade in.

I feel the same as others here and was hoping more of a trade in on the MK2. I have my $250 deposit in but not ready to take that hit on a fairly new MK2. Originally was going to upgrade dac and amp but i’m going to hold off on the dac and just go with the new amp when it come’s out. I still like the idea of separate streamer and analog volume/preamp anyway so why spend money on something i wouldn’t use or want to upgrade later. Just my thoughts.

The issue for us who own MK2 is that we have had it only for two years (many have less time with it), then we were told no more FW updates, and the new PGM DAC will be so much better.

That’s a major reason MK2 owners should get over $3k trade-in value because we’re the most loyal customers (by jumping into Mk2 at the Beta and defending it’s performance).

I get the sentiment and disappointment. It has been tradition at PS Audio to treat early adopters as the HiFi Family and we have benefited from some great trade-in deals and or discounts. Psychologically, we have assumed the role as “family” and uncle Paul has taken care of us. It has been too easy to forget that PS Audio is a business and current pressures have forced a change in focus.

Doing business with family is seldom a good idea…

Just a reminder that we did not start the “family”, Paul did. I totally understand that PS is a business. We were just blindsided by this and it would have been nice as a family to have a heads up as to what was coming. Unfortunately this feels more like a divorce.

$17,500.00 is a huge increase over a PMG 512 dac!

True, but I would sell DAC, Roon server (not much there), Rose Streamer, and Preamp.

15k right there going to fund MU2. the big question is what can I get for the now deprecated MKII

The MkII was promoted as having the ability to be improved/upgraded with firmware updates and that set it apart from the rest of PSAudio’s gear.

If they would have come out with the new series and still supported the MkII with improvements via firmware updates I doubt that the uproar would have been as great.

I also have the BHK Pre and the BHK 300 amps which were not promoted as upgradable so replacements for these does not bother me.

Maybe there was some breakup with Ted that prevented future updates from occurring. One would have thought that PSAudio would have had this spelled out in their agreement with Ted if this was the case.

I’m not happy how it turned out but I have no control over that. Mentally I just have to take myself back to before there were any hints of the new Dac, as my system sounds the same now as it did then (wonderful).

for those who want to upgrade from MKII to PMG, I guess there is another option, wait till there is a sale on the PMG. problem solved. Oh wait, nobody can wait for anything these days.

This is exactly what my thinking is at this point. I wasn’t even thinking about the dac upgrade until the word was out about a great trade in price was going to put a smile on our faces. Hardly smiling! The MK2 is a great dac, why take a big hit now when better opportunities down the road will become available and probably sooner than later. Bring on the amps!

Well…sounds like a plan then. From all indications the Grimm would be just the thing. I’m still waiting/hoping for a dac only option for the Grimm…

Exactly my thoughts Brian.

You make a good point - we didn’t start the family is right. I guess I am cynical enough to know that when an org/church/business/group says we are all family, it may be well intended but is not something one should take seriously.

The disappointment should be at least equally shared between PS Audio and the person(s) who believed that a business is going to treat you like family. Plus, what does that mean anyway - I’d rather be treated like a valued customer than a family member

The difference being they do not continuously tout upgradeability going forward, as Paul has.

PSA’s actions speak louder than words, been that way for some time. Just my experience.

…but better in so many ways.

My understanding is Ted bowed out for family/personal reasons. No reason to go into details here.

Besides by then the bugs will have been reduced or minimized.

I’m very happy with my DS2…no real thoughts of upgrading…yes, disappointed it only received a single upgrade - but that was a one man show and Ted did great by us for many years…it is a little weird listening to Paul talk about the incredible improvement brought by Blue Sky and then just a few months later raving about how incredibly better the new PMG is than Blue Sky…
