Modding the DirectStream DAC MKI

How about the NeoTech UPOCC 7N Copper? According to Ghent this should be better than Gotham. Have you tried it?

I went with Gotham based on @Somppsa recommendation as best he had tried. Maybe he tried one.

Yes I tried that UPOCC too and still have it here among a few other silver and copper UPOCC cables. It“s a really great sounding cable and mine from Ghent is terminated to be used with Hdplex. It is also very stiff and hard to bend.Stupid thing with these dc cables and LPS is that they use different connectors making direct comparisons difficult because you have to buy new cables for every LPS to match. It may be better than Gotham depending your system and taste.DC cables make a surprising big differences in sound. Try both, they are not that expensive

I’m very interested but miss out your first batch. Any chance to produce a 2nd batch? I will pre-order one. Thanks a lot.

hello…i am interested in modding my Direct Stream DAC with new upgraded transformers…can we make a deal regarding these transformers,or,if i can just buy it from you and do it by my technician here in Europe? thank you…

Diverting back to the Stillpoints ERS modding for a sec, if I can:

I did this mod and got great results,
Realized I hadn’t put a piece of the ERS stuff on top of the (lesser) transformers first time I did it, and put a piece on each transformer thinking that would be even better.

Listening over the last couple of days,
I think the sound is more muffled at the top end, a bit more shut in?
More sparkle and Life at the top end without it applied here.
Know its not an exact science, so will be opening the Dac back up and removing the ERS fabric from the transformers and calling it done for now.

Anyone else experience this when covering the Transformers?

Until I get my Edcor upgraded units fitted of course.

I don’t have a business anymore and I’m not soliciting business. I was merely offering to help somebody who happens to be local (the Seattle area) as a favor.

I would recommend ordering the transformers directly from Edcor, and having a local tech do this for you.

Thank you for your reply. I did checked site you advised and now waiting for a chat for getting information about transformers…do you know the model and how much there is these transformers inside this DAC?

If you send me your email via PM I will share a PDF with all relevant information about this mod from this thread.
This will also help to brief a local tech about what to do.

I used the AB60000S material series with Shield layer which does not suck out life in transformers having adhesive, nonconducting insulation layer then absorbing external to keep other HF noise out of transformer. No muffled sound. I would order this stuff.

The still points stuff is just a sponge.

Hello…thank you for your help…are these XS4400 transformers perfect fit for the DAC board? Only replaced with new ones over original ones?

@LeonT Go to post 2254. All of your questions can be answered from there.

I’ve been thinking about the foil treatments for power cords.

I am beginning to think that if we need to put foil around a cord, perhaps there’s an issue with the design and build of the cord in the first place. Should a properly executed cord need DIY shielding?

Thank you for information…these numbers are for posts,if i understand correctly?

Correct. They are for posts in this thread.

A power cord designed for audio or medical imaging should not need shielding. But for UL listing only designed not a requirement. The draining of RF and materials or shield all matter. Problem the really good audiophile cords usually cost 4 figures up. They charge for their R&D and durability of design. Foil is a cheap bandaid for protection unless you flex it or rip it.

Yes. The one thing is, that there are differing philosophies in cable design if shielding does more good than harm or not. The other thing is, that putting add. shielding on a cable, if beneficial, is quite a proof that the cable was not designed properly before.

Cool, you are kind, this is great, that i can find information about…thank you again…you are audiophile too?

Thanks for that,

Been following.your comments actually on your mods you did with your own Dac.
Good stuff,
The 3M stuff seems a bit more ā€˜forensic’ with what it does than the Still points?
(did I read somewhere here about it sucking out freq’s @1Ghz earlier in the thread though?)

Possibly not an issue/ problem,
Already have the improved Edcor transformers from Don Audio in Germany (UK based), so be getting a. Local tech to fit them soon.

No argument here with the big jump in, well, everything shielding the digital board as per the thread here.
It’s a different sounding DAC, and all for the better.

Looking fwd to getting the Edcor beefier TX’s fitted and (with JKRichards power board now fitted to my Dac) something like a Paul Hynes/Teddy Pardo level linear psu powering the analogue output board.

If I need to define myself, I’d say ā€œI’m a fellow who listens to a lot of musicā€.
