Modding the DirectStream DAC MKI

Make sure you use a cable with approx 100 Ohm impedance for each conductor.

Thank you.
The stabilizer is assembled according to the scheme of the Ukrainian radio engineer Nazar. More details can be found here: S-Audio.Systems // "Nazar`s regulator", variants
In my case, a circuit with three transistors was used.

Thx Yuriy,
Is it a diy kit?

No, there are no ready-made kits. I collected for myself and my friends who have DS, myself.

Hi Ted, could you elaborate on the 100 ohm impedance on power line conductors? Thanks.

Just above my post Maniac ask about replacing the ribbon cables between the digital card and the analog card. That cable contains the digital connections from the FPGA and the analog card and, in general, you don’t want to change impedances in a higher speed signal connection. The traces leading to and from the connectors for that ribbon cable are 100 Ohm and any cable that’s too far off could cause ringing in the signals, or worse, perhaps even wrong bits.

Ah, thanks. I thought you were referring to the power supply cables and was at a bit of a loss. Now I understand!

Maniac, I shielded all cables with grounded copper foil and it makes a significant improvement. To not disturb the characteristic impedance of the above-mentioned cable between the analog and digital board, I used fluffed cotton to space the shield away from the conductors. It looks a little mickey mouse, it made an improvement as well to my ears. I just used electrical tape to insulate the copper shield in case it came into contact with anything live.

Ted, regarding the power supply mod I recently had someone saying, why not care for a better symmetric 6V instead of 12V which is internally probably transformed into 2x6V.

I probably tell complete nonsense, it’s just what I understood roughly. Any clue what that means?

The output audio transformer lets me use a 10V supply instead of a bipolar 5V supply. That’s a lot less power supply components, simply having one instead of two.

Would it be an advantage to add a battery to the circuit in the supply of the analog card?

Does the part have code?

Some have. The voltage needs to stay close to 12V, say not more than 12.5V and no lower than about 10.5V or 11V. Too high of a voltage can cause premature loss of life in some of the power supply caps and over heat parts of the regulators. Too little will not be regulated and will surely sound worse than the stock supply. With high enough capacity batteries the voltage won’t vary much over a listening session.

Signs of life from Don Audio! I just received an order confirmation from Aaron from Don Audio for the XS4400´s and the estimated time of shipment is May 31st (yes it´s 2021, not next year ). Seems to be in progress at last.

They seem to be shipping much faster lately. I ordered mine and received them in a week.

Within the US and directly from Edcor you are right. But to Germany with Don in between it takes weeks and month…

And Edcor doesn‘t ship to whole Western Europe as it seems. Many countries are not listed. So we have to wait.
