MSB S202 Stereo Amp

Thank you Vmax, I always love your experiments and I’m so sad thinking that in future I couldn’t be able to follow your tweaks on gear I don’t own anymore, like the MK II. Can’t imagine how time I spent with absorber sheets, rings and dampening plugs, my dear King of Tweaks. I still have P20, SPP, BHK Pre and PST from PS Audio and I’m still a proud member of PSA Family, until Paul and other members will accept my presence and they will tolerate my raids in territories of other brands.

Just a P20 for me too… Unless it turns into a Stromtank…

Hi Luca, when I downsized my amps from the the BAT VK150 to M1200, I noticed the two areas that M1200 could not match. The soundstage depth was ½ of that of BAT, the other was mid-range magic. BAT was the champion in that with its all-tube design. So, even though it is not fun to hear criticism of amps that I own, I agree with you on most part.

However, M1200 has excellent control over bass, and a faster delivery speed. M1200 also has a well-balanced SQ and a very neutral sound. Overall, I am very happy with its performance, especially considering the price with trade-in. In its class it’s unbeatable. I have been doing many upgrades lately, but M1200 is not even in my list, yet.

You wrote us a nice detailed professional review with passion. According to your description, the MSB Amp has a magic as if it had an M1 or Master Fuse in the fuse holder. Have you checked :joy: I agree that music should have weight and not sound thin. I often notice that at my dealer that some systems that play there have nice details and spatial reproduction with high resolution. But it lacks weight and tonal richness to authentically reproduce music. Live music also has weight in the lower registers and doesn’t sound straight out of the box. I also had different amps. The big AVM monos I have now are similar to your description of the MSB. Compared to what I tried before, large instruments just seem bigger and more confident. The calm and serenity, the lack of any noise, no matter what the volume. The sheer power and infinite reserves. The character of Furutech Dps-4.1 power cable is similar. Weight from top to bottom with perfect timbre, a long decay of the sound. If you listen to music like this for a long time, I just miss something when I hear other systems. Then it’s just hi-fi again and not that the speakers recede and disappear from the mind’s eye. With which power cable did you audition the MSB? Your Dragon HC on the amplifier? Greetings Andrew

Thank you Andrew, yes Dragon HC power cord from amp to Puritan.

M1200s are great amps, Donald and I love them for a lot of reasons. I agree with you speed, reactivity and fast responsiveness are remarkable. Even voice’s realism in my opinion might be considered a point of strength. As usual much depends on synergy between components and accessories in a chain. Maybe our systems, that we used to consider so similar for years, a few months ago have started growing in different beautiful ways, each one with new qualities that are making us happy. For instance you are enjoying more Telefunken Mazda tubes while I preferred going back to Gold Lions, you have a superb Omega cable enhancing the performances of a fantastic MK II DAC while I started my (insane expensive) adventure in MSB world, you have all components plugged in one powerplant while I had to separate sources from amps.
Sadly it seems in our future we cannot help each other like in the past, assuming each result might be comfortable equal due to similar systems but I’ll be always happy to debate about audiophile’s stuff with you and will be always honored to read your comments, my friend.
Think about that: you have 600 bottles of reds while I love champagnes, so what, we both love fine wines and one day maybe we will be able to drink a glass together.

PS: I’ve started plugging the Ultimate cable right now, unfortunately my wife organized a dinner with friends so I’ve not enough time to do critical listening.

I’m just kidding. I don’t know if the audio or the watches are worse :joy:

One noisy P15 has caused all these trouble, but you have found a wonderful path to a better system! :laughing:Congratulations on your new MSB setup, and I will miss all the wonderful discussions on our similar system! Don’t worry, I’m still interested in your posts intensively. Your evaluation on upgrading has helped me more than any professional review! :golfing_man:

Hi Luca, sounds like you are loving the S202. Have you ever auditioned the BHK250?

Nope. No dealers here in Italy are able to allow me an home audition of PS stuff.

I may have missed this, but couldn’t PS Audio simply replace the buzzy P15…and make it right…?

Yes the dealer/importer gave me the opportunity to do this and (better) to upgrade, paying a reasonable difference, the P15 with a P20. We are closing this deal.

The fact is that during last weeks I’m liking the Puritan.

Time will tell.

When is the “quiet” P20 coming? This could get interesting. You can compare P20 to Puritan with the amps. You also can compare with/without Puritan with DAC.

Sounds like fun!

Still discussing the deal with my dealer, maybe within the end of July.

Lets hope you can make a deal then.

I got impatient and put the power cord that came with the streamer for a try (it is supposedly be “on par with Shunyata Alpha”). Well, I hope it improves more because It is going back to the cellar for more break-in time. So far it is not sounding better than my Silnote Orion M-1 serving the streamer.

I assume you are using both Dragon S. for your streamer and switch. Have you tried other power cords on either one to see how much improvement Dragon made? If my free PC does not work out, I may get another Dragon. But, there is a deminishing return factor there for sure. My Silnote is sounding excellent actually.

To be honest, I never used other PCs than Dragons Source since I bought the Statement and the Premier. And the Puritan cable sports the C19 plug, so my answer is, no I don’t.

Thanks! I figured! Yeah, I will try that PC again next week. Dragon is always on my list for upgrades anyway.

Many here in the forum use Dragon power cables. In another forum and also on the Audio Bacon website I had read that the Zenwave PSR 14 power cable silver ribbon cable with Furutech NCF connectors would sound better than the Dragon. Audio Bacon rated it Best of All Classes. And the price is significantly more affordable. The NCF connectors are significantly better compared to what Audioquest bolts on. Is there anyone here who has tried the Zenwave cable PSR 14 or 11? Greetings Andrew

The secret is don’t pay full price for the Dragon power cables. If you are you are buying them from the wrong place.
