My black FR20s arrived this morning, WITHOUT

I hope I don’t come off as “Captain Obvious” by noting that if this is an issue with stereo music sources, then chances are your speakers are too far apart. I would keep fiddling if I were you, but to each his own.

Great system/enjoy!

Great detail suggestion… An appropriately sized, black rubber or plastic cap would complete the assembly nicely (for just a few pennies).

“Nice work.”
TYVM… Without a 2nd person being around constantly to hold the TALL box, it was plenty clumsy, too. :slightly_smiling_face:

“I wonder how they would sound with Townshend Podiums.”
“Now you’re talking.”
Indeed, and instead of talking, YOU gentlemen get to buy all that stuff and tell us. :slightly_smiling_face:

When e-mailing years ago with Steve Herbeline (sp?) of Herbies Audio Labs, I was positing that my concrete-slab floor doesn’t vibrate… He responded, in kinder terms than my summary, that I only THINK my concrete-slab floor doesn’t vibrate… Hmm…thought I…I can feel the occasional large truck driving up and down the main street a halfblock away from the house…I guess it DOES vibrate… That comment and subsequent experience turned me into an isolatist rather than a couplist… I now have all my equipment isolated with various pads and/or devices ranging from $15 Herbies Tenderfoots to $200 AV Room Service’s EVPs.

“Does toe in fix your centre fill problem?”
No, it simply makes the speakers sound brighter.

"Maybe some type of decorative nut cap would be a better look… :+1: "
I suppose, but that nut is the locknut that prevents the foot from screwing in or out inadvertantly from the vibrations of the speaker… Selections in M8-1.25 are VERY limited.

As discussed earlier in the thread, my projection screen rather limits my options… Parked just outside the screen’s frame, the overall 2-channel sound (and multichannel, too, when played in 4-channel mode without a centerchannel) is quite good–the best I’ve heard in my system… My personal preference is wide-and-deep rather than narrow-and-dense-and-deep, so I’m probably finished fiddling, at least for a while.

“Great system/enjoy!”
TYVM.

Finally have enough burn-in time on the center and surround channels that I’ve turned them off… Still running the stereo channels 24/7, probably until next WE at about 500 hours.

The large plated brass top cap from the stock foot acts like a big lock nut and could be used with this SVS foot (instead of that little nut). Jeff, have you tried these?

Certainly would look better.

Happy Cake Day @straightwire

No; had not thought of that… I’ll try them… Thx Chris.

And ‘try them’ I did.

They look a bit large, but we’ll see.

Hooray for that!

FWIW, this is more aesthetically pleasing; at least to my eyes.

Nice work.

I like it!

Wonderful. Can you say (or guide me to a place you have already said) your thoughts on the Ohm Walsh?

I’ve never heard an Ohm Walsh. Did you mean the Walsh-type-driver HHR Exotics TLS-2s that I own?

Yes!

The system’s sounds continue to improve as everything continues to burn-in… I’ve noticed increased spaciousness including an increasingly solid center* without the centerchannel speaker (I listen mostly w/o the CC).

I can’t imagine how the '30s could sound better.

Trevor Doyle, Massif’s owner…

…wrote that my new equipment rack should be on its way by the end of this week; I’ll be installing my new Marantz AV10 pre/pro instead of my current Marantz '8805 pre/pro… I’ll also have room to implement a new SACD-playing system featuring an old PS Audio DirectStream Memory player with a new DirectStream DAC MkII… Finally I’ll hear just how much better than my current mid-fi SACD-playback system the hi-end system sounds; it’ll be 2-channel-only initially, and I might later add a Stellar GainCell DAC for surround channels.

My sister and I are now in the house without a kitchen or family room, which got demolished last week as part of a large remodeling project… UGH!

  • Do recall that my speakers are spaced rather widely.

WOW! ANOTHER best-ever listening experience… I know I gush about these things, but the music sounds breathtakingly excellent.

Most recent change to the sysytem is to add Townshend Podiums to the speakers a few days ago.

I removed the ‘20s’ feet and walked the speakers onto the Podiums… This and all adjustments were quite easy… I won’t say that I heard an immediate improvement, but the SACD system clearly sounds better tonite than ever before… Same everything-else as before–P20 regen. powering everything; Oppo '205 discplayer driving all three amps directly; main IC is Audioquest Dragon Balanced, other 5 channels* cable is all-AQ but much more humble than Dragon; main poweramps are Atma-Sphere Class D monos; center-and-surrounds poweramp is Emotiva; speakercable is custom made by Sonic Craft and uses four 18g. and two 23g. Mundorf silver/gold conductors per pole; net gage is c. 11-3/4AWG per pole.

  • Center, two surrounds, two SWs set at 25Hz.

gushing is half the fun

It’s fun to read your gushing about the FR20 speakers! I’m also interested in how your Atma-Sphere Class D monoblocks sound when used with a revealing speaker like the FR20. In reading about some of the Purifi MOSFET amps and a variety of the newer GaNFET amps, I get the impression that many of these amps are impressive in their expression of high frequency and upper midrange detail, but may not be quite as impressive in their ability to convey richness and fullness of tone in the midrange and upper bass so that voice, guitars, bass, etc. sound as natural as they should. What have you learned about the strengths and weaknesses (if any) of your A-S Class D amps?

Yes! Tell us more about the class D Atma-Spheres! What have you compared them to?

About the Atma-Sphere Class Ds (hereafter ASCDs):

  1. Their 100 watts into 8 is PLENTY for me; I do not listen at high levels.

  2. I love their size and VERY low weight; even this chubby oldfart can carry both at once.

  3. My BFfL is more golden-eared than I am; I had him listen to the ASCDs and compare them with PSA’s M1200s; he thought the only difference he heard was that the ASCDs were very slightly more spacious sounding than the M1200s… I was the techie during that comparo and wasn’t in a position to hear tiny differences; I still would like to compare them but so far have not.

  4. Tonal richness is very important to me, and I’ve never felt that the sounds from the ASCDs and FR20s are lacking at all in this regard. I suppose that if I were suddenly listening to speakers less sensitive than the '20s, I may well have an M1200 driving them, as I had no hesitation in using them for months with prior speakers.
