My open baffle speakers are finally here

Thank you for your info. I just finished a short holiday in Slovenia - did not see any high end store but it is an inspiring country with very kind people. I have a ribbon system Apogee Caliper set. It is already old but still functions too good to dismiss. I am thinking about an overhaul just to get the best out of it-again. The Calipers are about 1,20 m high, and radiating sound from the front and back almost 360 degrees around the speakers. Placement is critical to get the best imaging. I see you placed the speakers very near the back wall. That's at least good for the WAF factor too!

I had to place them this close to the back wall due to the size of the room.
The ideal position is far from the back wall and near field listening, meaning that you sit quite close (in a triangle) even if there is a lot of space behind you.

What can I say, they really speak for themselves.
This is world class - nuff said.
My Sonus Faber Extremas are just blown out of the window.

=D> I like it...!

Thanks.
It has some of the same personality to it as the Extrema had, even if the design differs.
You cannot stay passive to this design. You either like it or you don't.

Darn, checked their siteā€¦ some very nice speakers over there. Would love to hear your set. ^:)^

New speaker released by SoulSonic.

I am thinking of these as my surround speakers, however this is pretty much overkill.

They will do just fine in smaller rooms by themselves.

My new Lumin PS has finally arrived:

Pretty.

Pretty.

Pretty overkill, at least :)

@frode so what is the SQ effect of the PS? Itā€™s bit pitty itā€™s design is not matched to Lumin itself, but SQ is always more important (at least for me  )

Even before burn-in I think the sound is more distinct/less muffled.
This area is also where the PWD has an edge over the Lumin.
It is also quieter.
It needs 100hrs so I will return in a weeks time with my verdict.
I am happy so far!

Regarding the design match, the PSU is DIY so it is not expected.
Having said this the craftmanship leaves a very good impression.

Frode :)

Happy? - You bet! ^:)^

Frode :D/

Congrates they look pretty cool. And I am sure they sound it as well. Enjoy them.

Nice review and a good choice, Frode. When I came back from hearing Paulā€™s system one of the things that struck me about my system was that it was thin or lacking in power by comparison. Some of that is the DS DAC but clearly the IRS V has much power and body. The reviewerā€™s description of the baffle, which also function as a waveguide for the ribbon, get me thinking about trying a similar arrangement with my line source drivers. I never thought of sweeping baffles forward being worried about creating a cavity resonance. If the bump caused by the waveguide was low enough, though, it could be beneficial down where the driver begins to roll off. Are the baffles slightly convex facing forward?

Thanks

I think the review is pretty panegyric beating the MBL Extreme on certain parameters :open_mouth:

I am not sure about the baffles convex facing forward, but I can ask the designer about this.

Anyway, the woofers are AE Speakers Dipole12.

Since my room is 16m2, limiting the low end to 42Hz I am extending it to 20Hz with Rytmik F12SE subs.

The XO at around 50Hz is pretty seamless.

I mean simply are the baffles curved or flat?

There are no baffle for the woofer. The woofer is mounted on a bracket system (directly on an industry grade aluminum base).
If you mean the baffle for the ribbon column they are curved.
They are designed with a CAD/CAM system and cut accordingly.
The gain is 6dB.

Yes, thanks. Time to play with baffles again! Would you mind taking a measurement at the foot of one side of the baffle when you get a chance?

Just a new picture of my speakers that I find quite appealing

And you redecorated!4_gif Iā€™m messing with baffles on mine with good results. I never thought to use them as a waveguide and it hasnā€™t adversely affected the frequency response like I was afraid that it would. Really solidified the midrange.
