I just got back from work and thought I’d put a CD on (PS Audio SACD player). Ow heck, I feel like I got a new SACD player! I think I’m also going to have to tilt my speakers to direct them slightly downwards. The speakers seem more directional now! Big surprise. I think the jump in soundstage presentation highlights this. Interesting. I guess next thing is to recalibrate my BACCH4Mac!
In one of Paul’s videos you can see the massive transformer, which might well dictate the height.
2 ) Somewhere Paul mention that they wanted to maintain the same “footprint” for the series, So, the transport’s height would be dictated by the transformer, the width by that plus the width of the drive mechanism plus the electronics board, and the depth, well I would not want to put the transformer next to the drive so I would slide it to the back. Now we know a mono amp is coming but in setting the dimensions of entire line, you might want to include the possible inclusion of a stereo amp and, just guessing, Paul would want a separate transformer for each channel.
In addition, remember for rf isolation, the units are a box inside a box.
Let me shed a little more light on this murky subject. In the upcoming PMG Signature amp series we’re really going all out in terms of innovative design changes.
Let’s look first at what is “the same” in terms of circuitry. The new amps are Class AB, so no Class D, but that’s about the extent of it. Unlike prior designs these are heavily class A biased—the “Beast” (M800 is its official name) is running nearly 100 watts of Class A bias, which is one of the reasons for its size.
The power supplies are massive, as you might imagine for an 800 watt amp, but there aren’t any huge transformers inside. That’s because we’re moving to the far superior Hypex supplies that eliminate all the limitations we’ve had to deal with conventional supplies all these many years of making amps.
As for size, picture a front panel about half the height of a BHK600 and twice the length. So low and long. It’s a beauty.
Thanks. Even more exciting to hear for the first time the prototypes. Takes your breath away. Amazing design by Darren Myers and Bob Stadtherr. Killer amps unlike anything I have ever heard before. Truly.
Indeed, it’s a true beast. Every person that’s ever looked at it shakes their head and says, “what the hell? It’s huge! Where do I put them?” And, of course, these are meant for the floor on little pedestals next to your speakers. Ain’t no shelf gonna work.
Yes, that the smaller chassis that houses the upcoming stereo 200 and the monobolck and stereo 600s. The M800 is that same chassis with twice the depth.
Is PS Audio going to try and woo Darren back when it’s time for a new generation? Or did he leave 10 years of designs on his workstation? Just kidding, but also a legit question since all the new products seem to have Darren’s designs in them.
