Paul, not sure if you can answer this question yet. But will the revised P10 have the same DSD engine and cooper rails as the P20 just with less output and capacitance maybe?
Yes, that’s exactly right.
Ok, so would that mean the new generation P10 would be a large step above the previous P10? Or would a P20 still be the best move? The cost is a bit much at the moment is why I ask!
Paul, I need specific advice on my upgrade options. I currently have 2xP10 on 2x dedicated 20A circuits. One P10/Circuit drives my BHK monoblocks, and the other feeds my BHK Preamp + 3x Directstream (for MCH), 2 x Job Poweramp, my server and Oppo. The Job amps are spec’ed at 450W max each, but in practice they run far below peak - one driver my center channel the other my surrounds. The server is pretty heavy duty, probably pulling a few 100W
To transition to the nextgen powersupply I see two options:
(A) Get a single P20 on a single 20A circuit. Will this have enough juice for the Mono’s + Preamp + 3x Directream, 2 x Job Amp, Server + Oppo? I believe the P20 is spe’ed at 3600W, but the 20A circuit (2400W max) would trip before that I would think.
(B) Get a P20 for the analog components on circuit 1 and separate P5 for the digital components on circuit 2. Would this provide sonic benefits over connecting everything to the P20? Of course, if the P20 does not have enough Amperage to power all the components I default to (B).
Any other configuration you would recommend?
The P20 will sound nearly twice as good as even the new P10 because of its size, energy storage, and low impedance. The DSP10 will be better than the PWP10 but not by the same degree the P20 will be. There’s just no getting around having more muscle.
Yes, this is a sweet setup right now. Tough question. Certainly a single P20 has more than sufficient juice to handle the whole setup. You do lose the advantage of separated P10s but I guess if it were my system I would go with a single P20.
Thanks Paul, here is what I decided to do. I’ll sell one P10 and buy a single P20 and connect all my gear to it on a single circuit. I’ll drive it to the max and if the 20A circuit (which can deliver only 2400W, so this will trip before the P20 peak output level), holds out I’ll use a single P20 and sell my second P10.
If the single circuit cannot deliver enough amperage for all the gear, I’ll keep one P10 and move some gear to the second circuit, and may eventually swap it out for a NextGen P5.
A good plan, to be sure.
Is PSA planning on selling a 20-amp power cable for those who choose to use the P20’s 20-amp input?
Paul, I have a BHK 250 on a P10 now. Would I better off with a BHK mono block pair and current p10 or a P20 with a BHK 250?
Also in the mix, DSD DAC, BHK Pre, DSMP.
I am obviously not Paul, but for me the answer is obvious: go with the BHK mono block pair and current P10.
I agree with Elk.
So far, no.
Great! I found a deal on some BHK 300’s. So I’ll post my BHK 250 for sale soon.
I made the same decision earlier this week Darren. Now, the wait is on for the BHK 300s.
Elk, can you tell me what type of sound improvement I should hear with the monos vs the BHK 250?
Darren, BHK has said higher damping factor equals better driver control (aka tighter control over staring and stopping drivers). Per Paul the 300s have double the damping factor. Paul also indicated they have half the output impedence which means it supplies its power more easily for transients. Lastly, their is no channel cross talk providing better channel separation.
As an aside, halving the output impedance is what doubles the damping factor.
I have heard this multiple times and it’s not subtle. There’s an immediate improvement in space and spread that’s obvious. On one of my go to discs, the Rutter Requiem on Reference recordings, there’s a 300 voice choir. On the 250 they’re bunched together but go to the 300s and suddenly they are 300 separate people spread out from wall to wall and front to back. You can “see” greater details, the reverb of the fading voices bouncing off the hall walls are suddenly apparent where they weren’t there before, and now we know there are layers of tiered risers for the singers. It’s really remarkable.
Paul, I’ll know tomorrow when I pick up my 300’s!
