New PS Audio Subwoofer

Don’t drink them all at one sitting!

Well, subwoofers are a driver and amp technology focused product. That’s part of why I thought we should enter this market as that is my/our expertise.

Wilson are more system designers and treat subwoofer like they do a passive speaker (and didn’t used to even integrate amplifiers for many years). This isn’t the optimal way to maximize performance because the optimal woofer in an active system doesn’t necessarily have a flat sensitivity response (like you need in a passive speaker). B&C, who makes some of the worlds best pro audio subwoofer drivers did a pretty good explanation of this here:

Wilson partner with with driver manufacturers like SB acoustic and Scan Speak but these companies don’t make high output subwoofers.

In the past, they were buying some pro woofers from JBL and Aurasound for the WHOW and XS subs and later did this woofer with Glenn but this isn’t a core competency (really understanding the physics and transducer design of subwoofers).

F12 up and running. Will reserve detailed comments until the app is available (at 81 I don’t get up and down as easily as I once did) but here is my first impression: boy, my FR20’s really fill the room with base. Just confirms the fantastic result that Chris built into the Aspen series. And Chris, I really appreciate the candid remarks you have made here vis-a-vis the advantage (or not) of high level driving subs. I think the lack of the ability to feed your transmitter with other than low level sums it up.

The FR20’s, with subs, are quite nice!

I shouldn’t have read this  I am trying not to give in to spending my tax return on the F12.

I have WISA-compatible speakers that I use to play my music (I use Roon played through my Mac mini) and want to add this sub to my system to make it 2.1. The WISA transmitter I have is the Axxim Link that works well with my setup and has dedicated sub support. I see the F12 has a built-in WISA receiver. Will this work with the F12 out of the box?

There are multiple WiSA standards but this is using WiSA HT and so anything compatible with that should work. It looks like it should work but we haven’t tested this. Off the top of my head, I know the Buchardt active speakers and Platin Audio Solitions hubs etc are compatible.

Apologies for the delay on the app. Everything has been submitted to Apple and it should be up soon on the App Store. I’ll keep this thread updated wheb it launches.

It really makes adjustments nice to do them from your listening position.

Hi Chris.

There has been a lot of discussion on motor structure and design, but nothing on cabinet design. If you have a moment it would great to hear about cabinet design, materials , and structure to get an understanding about what role the cabinet has in the big scheme of things.

Thanks in advance! Rob

Look forward to it. Any need to provide something underneath? I have it on a rug which covers concrete (I am told my downstairs neighbour is a bit hard of hearing although I did put isoacoustics as feet for the FR20’s.

No need to put anything underneath but the feet are removable, if the case anyone wants to tweak.

With subwoofers, sound transmission happens regardless of mechanical isolation just because the wavelengths are so long that the pass through a lot of materials and through ductwork/HVAC etc.

Here are a couple of pictures of the cabinet internals on the subwoofer. Small subwoofers are easier than large full range speakers because the panel size can be made small enough and enclosure stiff enough that box panel resonances can be pushed entirely above the passband of the woofer. The cabinet is made of braced MDF with effectively a triple thick baffle.

We have a center brace and are blind mounting in the front baffle with a set of shoulder screws to sandwich the woofer. We use a PVC tube as a bushing and to ease alignment in assembly. This is somewhat similar to what we do on the FR5/FR10 but is connected through an interior brace rather than from the back of the enclosure.

The feet have a milled aluminum lock washer and very soft rubber foot. These have the same thread as our FR series speakers if someone wants to replace them but we’re happy with the performance.

Altogether, the goal on the enclosure was to make something rigid and solid without making it insanely heavy.

Subs more than one you figured it out!

Thanks to Paul and Chris, I now have a couple of these F-12’s to play with my FR-30’s.

FYI, there is a 17-inch SVS Ultra sub in the back to deal with room modes and add some music that you feel, but don’t hear.

Great looking room and setup!

Nice! And, I am loving the artwork on the side walls!

Ronnie Wood did those paintings (limited prints). We met in Denver at an art studio and he signed another one for me before the concert, that are in the back half of the room. Thanks

I’m envious, but also happy that you have such treasures! Thanks for sharing some details.

F12 up and running with wireless. Connecting was trivial-I had more trouble inserting the proper plug in the power adapter than connecting the sub to the transmitter.

With no tuning, moving about, or adjusting other than volume it clearly is rounding out the base provided by my FR20’s. Lots of base and excitement in the following (not sure yet about the mastering but the pressing is outstanding).

Also a wonderful experience streaming through Roon!
Marvelous resolution and spatial presentation.
They did make great recordings back in the days.
