New PS Audio Subwoofer

Thanks Chris:
That clears things up. I guess I could avoid the cable issue by getting the optional transmitter.

The thing that amazes me about my REL subs is I use the high level inputs. But I just connect the positive leads between the amp and the sub. The negative leads are taped off and connected to nothing. This seems like it shouldn’t work but it works perfectly. The REL manual says to do it this way with differential amps.

As others have mentioned, the Foundry’s price is extremely compelling and it made me wonder how it will compare to Wilson Audio’s Submerge which is $29,750 ($89,250 if stacking 3).

Oh it will sound exactly the same.

I’m running a pair of REL subs with FR20’s…would it work if I wanted to replace one sub at a time, and for a while use 1 PS sub and 1 REL ?

Any downside to using the wireless transmitter for the subs?

Not really. Maybe just the extra expense?

24/96 lossless transmissions, low skew. Delay is low enough that it’s seamless. Wireless avoids any issues with ground loops.

A wire is simple and easy but we have a first class wireless solution.

You can certainly mix and match subs subs with good results. They don’t all need to be identical.

Thanks Chris …

Have any of these shipped to magazine reviewers or early customers yet?

When can we expect to hear some comments and additional measurement data?

Does selling direct limit any PS Audio exposure to magazine or dealer influence on supporting new products like these?

revue show everything, except essential! sorry about that one!

We started shipping these out today. I’m not sure if 100% of the orders shipped today (some may ship tomorrow).

What additional measurement data are you interested in seeing?

We haven’t sent anything out for review yet. You might see some press coverage from them when we show them at AXPONA.

There aren’t a ton of magazines that review subwoofers. Stereophile and TAS sometimes review subs but generally don’t do measurements of them. Guys like Audioholics review a lot of subs (and maybe we should reach out there) but are somewhat focused on the home theater market and giant ported or 18”-21” subs receiving their highest recommendations.

Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity do a few subwoofer reviews. HifiNews is an option.

We still have a good relationship with audio reviewers and magazines. Where do you read your subwoofer reviews?

Well, this connector isn’t on the current BHK amps but will be on the future PMG Amps.

I haven’t heard any discussion about including a cable with the new amps. We didn’t include a cable with the subwoofer other than an XLR cable to daisy chain the subs in the stacking kit.

Here is an example cable - https://www.performanceaudio.com/products/custom-cables-4-pin-xlr-xlr-cable-made-from-mogami-2534-neutrik-connectors

Well, I think there are a lot of reasons why people buy a brand of speakers (or a car or a lot of luxury items) beyond simple performance. Wilson has a unique brand story, cabinet construction and appeal and people buying a wilson subwoofer almost certainly have other wilson speakers that they are trying to match aesthetically.

That being said, I was always a little puzzled by their subs. For almost 20 years, they have been using the same 12” woofer that Glen Stasky at NCA Labs designed. He designed a few DIY and car sub drivers like the Parts Express Titanic Mk II, the old AVI SV12 and SV18 and used the same double frame approach (as a spider spacer for the Memphis Car Audio LVS woofer.

It’s good but not up to the level of todays best.

As far as I can tell, they are using the same driver, since back in the “watchdog” days. Maybe they finally updated this but I don’t think so. They have moved to a 6 dB higher power amp from SpeakerPower but the default bass extension actually looks a little worse than the watch dog from all those years ago. The do have a 30 Hz EQ to bump this up but that seems tuned a little high.

If I personally ever had $30K+ for a reference subwoofer system, these would certainly not be on the short list.

The FR speakers are a perfect example of this, and their performance is simply outstanding. You and the entire PS Audio team should be proud of your work on this. It is the back story of these speakers that got me hooked (and @paul videos on their progression), and just knew these speakers would be fantastic.

@Chris_Brunhaver

Really interesting regarding the Glen Stasky driver used by Wilson Audio. I naively assumed they would have continually evolving sub drivers.

I’ll take a case

Haha. Chris Harden from sales gave us the Miller beer reference.

So ordered! :joy:
