Octave Records gets closer

Hi Paul / @tedsmith

What’s the planned connection method between Sonoma DSD Workstation and DirectStream DAC/s?

AES3? TOSlink?

Will you be making some A/D to replace the Myteks that he uses? Appears that Mytek and EMM are his preferred setup.

I understand they will be sticking with the Myteks.

Too bad. Has he replaced the Pass Labs with some BHK’s yet? When I was in his studio it was full of Pass amps.

At the January COAudio meeting there, he had BHK’s for the front speakers. He told me he prefers them, and says they provided better sense of space and localization. He joked that biggest issue with the PASS amps was how to get them out to the car without getting a hernia ; )

Hard to see here, as I wan’t specifically shooting the amps - but a view from the Chair, with a surround DSD master playing back. Some of the stuff is just so beautiful sounding and visceral, I was moved to tears. I looked over at him at one point, shaking my head in amazement, and he smiled and said, “It’s not how it sounds, it’s how it Feels”.

Must have changed since I was there and it was full of Pass amps for the front and rear channels.

Nothing bad here; Myteks are superb ADCs.

If you say so! I had one of their dac’s…worst dac experience ever!

Yes - he’d been using the PASS amps for a long time, and Paul finally talked him into trying them. I’ve always found Mytek’s DACs too “analytical” for my taste, though I can’t speak to their ADC’s specifically, which are another deal entirely.

As a very smart engineer buddy of mine said, “A digital device is only as good as the Analog section”.

The Pass amps he was using (I think) were the XA-160.5’s, and were still being used on the rear channels at the time of the CAS meeting Beef references.

I’ve heard both and the newer XA 160.8’s are a whole 'nuther story. Might be a more interesting comparison.

Speaking of which - if you’re interested - Tony Cordesman of TAS compared the BHK’s to his reference XA-160.8’s in an extensive review. Long story short, he felt that each set of amps presented a unique perspective. He bought the BHK review samples for a second reference system. I guess this is what happens when you have products from two legendary designers and an appropriately large budget

In the post I quoted Paul above he says “The Meitners will certainly be the AD.”

That’s the post of his that you replied to also.

There’s a special optical cable arrangement we’re having built to connect them. I haven’t yet seen the specs but I will soon.

Thanks. I guessed it was going to be something special, because I see the optical isolation is mentioned as a key feature on the Sonoma site.

Pretty cool.

Once it’s all hooked up and working eventually, would love for one of your YouTube vids to take us through all the gear and connections involved.

Given the parties involved I am sure the sound will be first class. We ALL should listen to this well done YOu Tube piece on the music of today and cherish any recordings which do not fall into the trap talked about.,This is important! Listen to it, please.

There is a multitude of passionate artists out there who are innovating, exploring sound and the very definition of music. You just have to be willing to look beyond the billboard charts or what “the media” deems to be popular.

There’s a big world out there. Explore it.

He’s one of the best bass players alive today! Love him in the Flecktones (which are amazing recordings) and his solo albums A show of hands and What Did He say sound amazing too through my DS Memory Player and DAC! Would be great to get a Victor album in DSD!

@Paul:
you mentioned Octave records in your podcast the other day. Perhaps you know this already but the Takacs quartet is based out of UC Boulder. I really like them - their Beethoven string quartets are super.
They record for Hyperion (they used to be with Decca, I think). Even with Hyperion producing, they may want to check your DSD-uber studio and record there. That would be swell.

I Hope for kind of Blue Mono (Miles) 45 rpm vinyl

Doing reissues that were not done multiple times before would be even better

In my Case i only listen to Old stuff that are well know :disappointed:
