PMG 512 DAC first impressions

I know of three ways to use Qobuz:

  1. Via the Qobuz Connect app. For this you need a streamer that is designed to do so.
  2. A control point such as mConnect. This is how I accessed Qobuz before getting the AirLens. Not as slick as the Qobuz Connect app, but it worked.
  3. Roon. (I don’t use Roon so I cannot give any details.)

Will the 512 utilize any of these via it’s internal streamer?

I believe they will all work. However, I don’t (yet) own a PMG DAC. I imagine some people who do will confirm.

Thank you!

If all you want is qobuz, the. Qobuz connect is all you need.

Or you can stream qobuz using bubblupnp on android devices.

My 512 uses Roon with no problem.

The Qobuz Connect app works with the 512 streamer.

PMG DAC finally arrived, sadly it has a hunk of heavy metal sliding around inside it (no pun intended) and was on its side in the fedex truck (I went to retrieve it because the driver said it was heavy, gen z) - granted, there were no markings on the box regarding handling for transport (ie fragile, this side up, etc). so maybe fedex just tossed it around or whatever, but I didnt even remove the plastic, just sent and email and a video to PS Audio…

likely have to swap it out which means a longer wait… quality problems to be sure, but nevertheless a big ugh and feeling a bit like “cmon PS Audio, what’s going on?!”

Am 100% sure PS Audio service will sort this out, but also wondering if they might need to rethink their quality control going forward so as not to destroy their brand…

Most unfortunate.

The Same thing happened to me. Something inside the chassis was sliding back and forth as I was trying to remove the plastic packaging material. I did not want to turn it on! I called PSA and spoke with Delia who was very helpful. Per Delia’s suggestion, I will send it back for a replacement. I used to work in QC many years ago and we had a motto: “Remember the customer is the final inspector!”.

The 512 uses a non-branded version of AirPlay that works great and is lossless and stable.

No. Qobuz native app works great for PMG and you do not need Roon. This is how I use the PMG 512 at home, with the Qobuz app and it works great.

Our FedEx driver stacked a 3-bottle shipment of wine on top of the DAC and humped it all up to the door. He told my wife it was heavy as he put it down on the floor inside the door.

Here’s hoping your replacement comes quickly.

Absolutely. Because we built the analog volume control into the output of the PMG 512, as a standalone, it beats the pants of (at least) the MKII and BHK Pre combo. It won’t take you but a minute or two of listening to determine that.

Add the PMG Pre someday and you get an even bigger jump.

A heavy face plate does not make a component bombproof or fedex proof…

yup -was so stoked about finally recieving it, now I feel like a kid and Christmas got postponed! still can’t wait to hear it - am sure it is every bit as amazing as everyone is saying…

Thanks Paul! Apologies for being pedantic but is it Airplay “1” or “2”? A lot of manufacturers seem to still believe Apple’s marketing schtick that Airplay 2 is lossless, when in fact it’s been demonstrated here and here that it’s a lossy protocol, i.e. a downgrade over Airplay 1. That’s despite indicating “lossless” on the iOS playback screen.

An easy way to tell the difference is that Airplay 2 will do multiroom (i.e. you can select multiple different endpoints on your iPad or iPhone Airplay menu, and the selected endpoint shows a tick mark inside a circle) whereas Airplay 1 only allows one streamer endpoint to be selected (and the selected endpoint shows a tick, but no circle).

After the anticipation that is quite a let down. :frowning: It seems that FedEx is to blame due to rough handling, but then you mention PS Audio quality control. So do you think FedEx broke it or that it shipped with loose components? I guess I got a bit confused trying to follow what happened.

Am not sure but am aware of other issues similar to mine - and it seems there have been some hiccups with the rollout if this PMG DAC - am a fan of PS Audio, just want them to remain excellent.

P.S. Already shipped the defective unit back and am awaiting replacement - as always PS Audio service does not disappoint.
