PMG 512 DAC first impressions

Unfortunately, I turn off the display when listening (old habits die hard). After receiving a fresh DAC unit (had one of the earlier editions), I never encountered any streaming issues using Roon or Qobuz. I’m quite happy with the purchase at the moment and consider it a major improvement in sound over the MKII (or MKI if we are talking about streaming). No issues using different inputs either. Roon certification will be the final step for me.

I warned you. once you hear it… Its pretty darn good. Keep pushing them for upnp..you are not the only one that uses it from a few chats here I have learned.

Gotta be the HDMI cable I’m using. Unless I buy something from Tubulus or RAL or AudioQuest, I’ll just stick with the no-cable-needed internal streamer.

This is one good feature missing in the PMG 512 DAC. Paul, this can be put back in ?

With MK2, I don’t have to touch it. it is left on 24/7 in my TV+Hifi setup and it auto switches to active input.

I think that Paul has indicated that essentially all that the stand by mode does is turn off the display (and disable the output of amps). Given modern display technology (mine in my 2013 Lexus is still as good as day one) not sure this matters except possibly for aesthetics (well smack me aside the head, we got poor folks out there with brand new 512 display issues). I do wonder about the laser in the transports—only on when actively reading a disk?

That is true about Stand By Mode, however I was referring to the auto sense of input feature on the DS MKII, that is lacking on the PMG 512 DAC.

Yes, that would be a nice feature. The 512 does switch to CD input when the remote “play” is pushed. Wonder though if might get to be frustrating as I would guess you would need to turn of the source to the streamer before activating another input source.

What’re you using for your UPnP server? Using Foobar2000 as server/player to the PMG DAC and JPlay on iOS as controller works with DSF (DSD64, DSD128, and FLAC352.8) for me. Playing from Foobar directly plays DSD natively on the DAC, but JPlay does DoP.

I’m using MinimServer 2.2, which has been working for years and continues to work, without change, through my Aries streamer. Sending DoP rather than DSF through the 512’s internal streamer works except for DSD256, which causes short dropouts to be embedded throughout.

I’d like to send DSF for a couple of reasons:

A) it should work properly without the need for the server to transmogrify DSF to DoP

B) DoP is interpreted and reported as PCM by JPlay on iOS, which it looks like even though it’s really DSD in disguise. I’d like JPlay to report the format as DSD128 rather than 24-bit 352.8kHz.

I’m not sure what you mean by “…but JPlay does DoP.” JPlay doesn’t muck with the bits at all, and just hooks up the server with the renderer. If JPlay looks like it’s feeding DoP to the streamer, that’s because your server is feeding DoP to the streamer. Maybe (probably?) I’m misunderstanding you.

Oh I see what you’re saying. Yes that is the same here; JPlay showing a PCM encoding rather than DSD flag.

Just dropped off my old DAC at fedex. Keeping the PMG DAC despite the ongoing software issues - am that confident in PS Audio after service, and the PMG DAC sounds that good - seems to get better and better as I listen.

How so? Seems like we are forever hearing negatives like the appearance of the bottom plate but few talk about the most important thing- the actual sound.

Unfortunately, the noise surrounding the bottom plate, for example, drowned out the exceedingly positive reports of the sound.

Who would have thought of a unit that is advertised as having a really low noise floor!

Not true. There are many very positive comments.

Besides sound, want to also mention new remote is tons better, changed chanel and no issues (although my TV got wonky so habe to replace anyway). Better range etc. Am getting used to buttons, but still need glasses on occasion.

Elk,

I think you’ve forgotten that the bottom plate issue was originally raised on the pre.

I don’t think there’s been any talk on the dac bottom plate - so I think the issue of sound over bottom plate is no longer being discussed.

I think the bottom plate issue has been accepted and is relegated to the archives.

Cheers

I checked with engineering and this isn’t going to be possible with the way the inputs work. Great idea, though.

I recall the history.

My point simply is that other unrelated observations, be it the bottom plate or other matters, drowned out the many positive reports of the sound.

I have noticed that most folks who post issues with their PMG units have gone out of their way to note how they love the sound - to the point of saying that they are going to keep it despite the frustrations with flaws/glitches etc.

At least, that’s they way I’ve been reading the reports.
