I don’t think the markets are liquid enough to assess accurate values for either my audio system or my cars. Not that it’s a very expensive car (2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec. B), but there were only 500 made. At least the more honest sites state that they can’t find comparable prices. And on the other side just my speakers cost interestingly more than my car and my wife’s Lexus together. And what are thousands of SACDs and thousands of CDs worth these days?
It all boils down to priorities. I value music and having a decent system to listen to it, more than I value the vehicle that gets me from point A to B, and that is vulnerable to dings, scratches, and distracted drivers.
Very nice! And, a great room. Question for you: Why are the “lids” off of the BHK’s?
Enjoy.
scotte1: “Very nice! And, a great room. Question for you: Why are the “lids” off of the BHK’s?”
TYVM and TYVM… Lids are off because I LOVE PARTS.
My Main audio system MSRP is above the value of both of my cars combined, and about the same compared to the MSRP of each car, when the cars were brand new. (2012/2009)
Although I have neither the knowledge or desire to create a poll, I think it would be interesting to ask the question: What’s the longest you’ve gone without buying something, no matter how small, for your system, or even just moved things around to tweak the sound…
Does that include building my own components?
Geez, especially that!!! We’ll have to come up with a new curve for you, Ted.
ha … well… I did do an msrp/msrp comparison as I didn’t read the entire thing… just added up what I spent in my head. Its very close for the main rig - but the car - depending on which one just gets the edge I’d say… and I drive new cars for the most part.
Cool . . . Subaru drivers unite! I drive a 2017 Forester 2.5i Touring currently; in the past, I had a Legacy sedan followed by a Legacy wagon (non-Outback). Great cars in the snow, and good thing, too, as Vermont just shattered the State’s all-time November snowfall record set way back in 1900.
My car is $200k, but my gear is $300k (in Norwegian Krone) so my gear trumps it
Poll - Millennial version - Is your Car Audio System worth more than your car? : )
Daily Driver or Show Car? It’s a mixed bag…
Daily Driver = 0.75X Stereo
Show Car #1 - 2.5X stereo
Show Car #2 - 2X stereo
Show Car #3 - 1X stereo
Bicycle#1 - 0.25X stereo
Bicycle#2 - 0.15X stereo
Bicycle#3 - 0.10X stereo
Bicycle#4 - 0.10X stereo
Exactly, this would be the even more interesting question:
Who’s theoretical MSRP value of music is higher than the gear‘s MSRP? In my case it’s about 250-350k vs. about 130-150k
And the current value of half of the LP‘s is quite higher than the MSRP
And who has the most pistons in the garage?
@elk - So, my 3 car garage houses just American cars w/ V8 motors. So, they all have the same piston count. The Vette has 1,000HP so it wins for power. Deuce Coupe has just 600HP, and 56 Thunderbird has 200HP if lucky; however, I just fuel injected it so it goes pretty good for a 312 “Y” motor…
The RR Evoque has only 4 cylinder turbo… so it would have been the RR; however, it gets parked in the driveway cause it is not American…
Oh Snap!
I’m a millennial! 29 years old. (Pun intended) I’ve only added a JL Audio subwoofer to my car, so no.
But my 2 channel setup is about $30,000 MSRP. Which means it’s more expensive than my Toyota Camry.
But then there are motorcycles, ATVs, chainsaws, snowblowers, brush mowers, trimmers, not to mention the occasional V12.
So many spark plugs, oil filters, oil weights, etc. to keep track of (I have a cheat sheet, which also includes wrench/socket sizes and specific tools needed needed for oil changes and other service.).
The two channel system in my garage is worth less than all of the vehicles.
@elk - Yeah, my total bicycle hobby (bikes, cloths, trainers…) is close to the stereo; my least expensive hobby; however, got to watch out… like one of the guy’s wife pointed out: it becomes your mistress very quickly. Yeah, I can see my wife reigning me in on this one… it is very difficult being at child in your latter years, there are so many cool things to get into… just don’t have the time…
