Power issues

Several weeks ago I revived an ongoing concern if my high incoming power distortion, as measured in
THD by my P20, is affecting my sound. My current power device is the PowerZone, which passes everything, good and bad.
I like the PZ yet do not know if another device in the chain, like a DC blocker, or regenerator, would help.
Several here have tried, and the general consensus seems to be that only the DC blocker might help.
I recently moved my system and noticed an improvement as the 10ga. wire run has burned in a couple weeks. So, I can hear changes in power conditioning, if you will.
Another additive device runs contrary to the PZ’s
just “plug it in the wall” philosophy, but, as the designer has stated (paraphrased) “if you like something in front of it, use it”.
Who knows, one of those cheapie “hum buckers”
could work but the trend is usually something more exotic, i.e., expensive, or nothing at all. I might be chasing my tail on this and should leave it be…however.

You will be best served by defining the problem, and investing in same. I suggest power quality analysis using a Fluke 43B. Possibly a service in your area. You may want to start by contacting the ComEd Division HQ in your area. They may be able to either assist or refer you to a service.

With out characterizing the problem you guessing at best. If you are actually experiencing 7-10% incoming THD, ComEd may be able to assist. There may not be a simple solution, hum bucker, etc.

I just had two neighbors install solar panels, three now on the block. Each of them are on a different branch circuit, so that may slightly mitigate the noise generated by them.

I work for Eversource in New England and I do know we have what are called circuit owners in the field who do take customer power quality (usually from commercial companies) calls and investigate the issue. Could be internal to house or coming from street. 10% seems out of acceptable range.

You really want shake the tree I know calling the regulators here in CT makes utilities jump. But try them first.

Good advice. If your THD is really at 10% due to external sources ComEd should be involved. Yes Illinois ICC can be a good hammer to get things moving. There was a time when I had contacts within ComEd that could have been of assistance, but like me those resources have all retired.

A couple of causes other than EMI/RFI or noisy switching devices are an overloaded local substation or overloaded supply voltage phase (phase imbalance).

Before looking at the medicine you should let the doctor do the diagnosis.

I had a technician at home taking measurements with a professional instrument on my mains for a week. Then he sent me a report of 50 pages with graphs (completely un comprehensible to me) that another technician (and audiophile) helped me to analyze and summarize for audio purpose.

Once you know what is wrong (if any), you can do the next step to try and solve the problem.
