As Jvvita asked, you need to tell us your source. The S300 requires 1V to load it, CD players tend to be 2V (single ended) so should be ok.
I used a Denafrips unity gain preamp with an S300 years ago without issue. Other factors that play into this are the size of the room, speaker sensitivity, and output voltage of the source. In my case, it was a medium-sized room with 87db speakers and a 4v balanced source.
that’s good to know. I have a fairly large room, but efficient speakers 90 DB at least. I turned the premium volume up 80 or 90% and I get 87 DBA. I mean, you can almost hold the conversation at that. There’s definitely something wrong
I have audio lab, Cd, transport, and Zen stream are running into aa Ghishelli DAC
Geshelli typically 2.5V output voltage. It should be enough. Maybe a fault in your preamp volume control. Best seems to swap the preamp.
so to the best of your recollection, did you ever listen to music with your preamp turned much past 50%?

Because with this preamp at 90% I’m getting I guess about as loud as I normally listen but not very loud that’s for sure, bec
