PS Audio Stellar Gain Cell DAC balance issue

Hello everyone,

I have issue with Stellar GainCell DAC.

When using any digital input, sound it moved to left channel so I need to set BALANCE +10 RIGHT.

Using analog inputs, BALANCE=0 is correct.

Does it make sense? Is this software or hardware issue?

(I wish to fix on my own as the gear is second owned and probably lack of service in China)

Yes. Imbalance can often be induced by the nature, size and shape of the room and its furnishings. Mine is set to +9 Right since a large soft, overstuffed sofa is on the right side of the room. With the balance set that way, the soundstage is exquisite.

Welcome!

Are you able to test a different digital input or a different digital source?

Yes, I’ve tested with different numerical inputs, and this problem persists. I’m not sure if it’s a design flaw of the manufacturer or a software issue. I wonder if there’s a firmware update available for this model.

Looks like firmware v2.3.1 was released on November 11, 2025 (not sure if it addresses the channel imbalance issue you are having):

Hello, thank you very much for your kind reply. It seems that it’s not for my model, because there is no USB port on the back of this model.

I had a balance problem near the end of my time with the unit, before I traded it on a Stellar Gold. I tracked it down to a no-name (read: cheap Amazon) XLR output cable to one of the power amps. It had been performing fine for several years and then for some reason I had to disconnect and reconnect it. Suddenly it decided to cause problems. Bought a replacement pair from AudioQuest and balance was restored.
