Putting an AVAA C214 in the same room with a subwoofer makes me think of putting a humidifier and a dehumidifier in the same room.
And reducing Bass at the listening chair seems wrong.

I think a better analogy is you would prefer a dry heat vs a humid heat at the same temp. The extra timing of slow slow bass decay is like a humid sweaty day.
Well… getting more bass (sub) and getting rid of room bounced bass (AVAA) might be the best thing possible
Stupid for the average Hifi-person
Marvelous for an audiophile
It sounds mean when you say it like that.
Less is more! Or is it more is less?
Sorry about that. Ironic humor is needed amongst people that pay more for cables than most people spend on TV, Hifi and computers combined.
I actually think that most audiophiles are either very emotionally and passionately connected to the music…. Or very analytical, intelligent and improvement oriented in such a way that they never gets satisfied.
Both versions makes the planet better….
If other people thinks caring for good acoustics is stupid… it doesn’t bother me…
Cheers from Sweden, one of the more ironic and sarcastic humorous countries…
LOL!!
“Pot”, meet “Kettle”.
tony22, it looks like I saved them using separate mdat files - I just hit the save button on each measure file.
dchang05, just hope your wife doesn’t do deep breathing exercises in front of the C214 - it could startle her.
I was hoping to not want to add subs after cleaning up the bass boom.
Ironically, what has convinced me I need subs is the REW graphs showing a null around 60Hz - it helps explain why kick drums can sound funny on my system at times. The main reason I was considering adding subs after cleaning up the bass boom was for better sound stage, but now I have a null to address.
After seeing the graphs I’m pretty sure subs will help both the null and sound stage.
For what it’s worth, properly integrated subs will also allow for superior midrange performance (which, IME, “clarifies” the whole performance) and some real magic.
Just do it!
No problem! Send me both! I can do the combining and comparisons.
That would be me.
Cheers my friend!
This thread has morphed a couple of times, AVAA C214, Black Box and now I thought I would add another set of variables-
Thanks to Upscale Audio I just picked up a pair REL S/510s to see if the C214 plays well with subs.
Figured if I was going to add subs I may as well do it now before I spend more on another C214.
No surprise, the subs are delivering what I was told to expect. However, in my room the subs add to the FR20s room exciting LF (below 40Hz) with ringing you can measure with a stop watch. If I did not have a way to acoustically effect the LF ringing I would seriously consider moving to another room.
Good news, when I turned on the C214 the low lows become listenable while the rest of the subs benefits are being heard. The C214 seems to work well with the S/510s - it may be having even more of a good effect with the subs or I’m benefiting from subs instead of being irritated by the humidity (thanks @minnesotafats).
As m
I know it’s not what you want to hear but you may have too much speaker for that size of room. The FR 10 might be more appropriate especially now that you have the subs.
I am so amused to learn you didn’t have subs. LOL
Yeah, I semi-retired and decided to turn my office into a listening room. When the FR20s went on sale I jumped to replace my Ohm wT2000s. The Ohm speakers had room trouble also but since it was primarily my office I lived with it.
Now I would like better, so that’s why all the buying and trying gyrations.
Interesting thing, with the subs the C214 goes into what sounds like a feedback loop if I walk too close to it. When I was tuning the subs I walked close to the C214 and heard what sounds like microphone feed back. I’m listening closely to see if there are other times when it might feedback - so far I haven’t heard any.
Well this morning I was listening to a speaking voice - no music not singing and I could hear a ringing at the end of each word. I turned off the C214 and the ringing went away, I could also get it to lower if I lowered the C214 gain.
I had left the Black Box in the room so I removed it - the ringing went away, the C214 and the Black Box were interacting in a bad way. With the subs and the C214 my system sounds better without the Black Box, unlike when I didn’t have subs.
Very interesting…thanks for sharing your observations.
I may have missed a note earlier in the thread; but have you played around with just the Black Box (leaving the C214 out or off)?
Thanks again.
Have you tried powering down the C214 and using the Black Box? I fully believe using both could be a bad thing.
