Not cited by hate groups ( Provide me with a reference) but by honest and righteous people targeted by hate groups. Like Antifa and the likes That is what the quote is about.
As far as apathy is concerned, it seems like it has become the new normal.
I have only seen the Plato “quote” cited by hate groups and by others who seek to justify their own intolerance. But it certainly could be used in other ways.
“Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good and just and beautiful.”
A wonderful sentiment but again not Plato, even though this is a common attribution.
Plato was supportive of music, but opined music must be limited to good rhythm (simple and direct), proper harmony, melody, modes (Dorian and the Phrygian are allowed, they alone are of use for warlike men), and instruments (only the lyre and the harp for use in the city, objected to flutes). His views on music were nuanced to say the least.
(One of my degrees is in philosophy. I have read a lot of Plato.)
Yeah, it seems like everything I found cites Plato except for the article posted below. Now I’d really like to know where it originated. Thanks again for setting me straight. I truly hate being a source for disinformation.
The “quote” first appeared in The Pleasures of Life, Part II by Sir John Lubbock (Macmillan and Company, London and New York), published in 1889. The book provides no citation to any of the works of Plato. The language does not appear in any of Plato’s writings.
But as it appears on refrigerator magnets, it must be true.
I’m pretty sure this is fake. It was probably made-up by some supremacist groups somewhere on the internet. I read about it.I just can’t find it. But like Quasimodo, it rings a bell.
