Reference Recordings at Acoustic Sounds - Purchase DSD or PCM version?

#1

Acoustic Sounds is selling Reference Recording downloads in DSD or 176.4 PCM. Here is a quote from them:

“Recorded natively in the PCM format at 176.4 kHz/24 bit and converted to DSD using the best equipment available. Also available as a FLAC and ALAC download.”

What format would you purchase for playback on the Direct Stream?

I’d use the native format when known and possible. The RR’s I have are great.

RR albums are excellent. I also suggest buying and playing back the native format of any recording whenever possible.

As a practical matter, Keith Johnson’s work sounds better down-converted to a 320 kbps MP3 than most DSD or high resolution PCM recordings do at their best.

+1 again. Native is usually best IME.
