We are finding that out as well, the issue being I want more space than what a typical condo provides.
As we age mobility issues will become a fact of life unfortunately. Having vertigo I almost did a nose dive over the bannister a few days back, not fun.
I just sold much of my second system except Zu Soul Supremes (PST, DSD, F7)
Moving to a high-rise condo was difficult for a couple years. But now I’m quite happy; one level 2100 sq ft. No private garage but at 73, I’m done crawling under the car.
The building is bank vault solid and mid 70dB is not a problem for me or my neighbors.
I upgraded all my audio gear when I retired, some 7 years ago and when Covid hit I was very, very glad I had. I downsized by getting rid of all of my books etc, from my office, most of my fancy clothes, and lots of books and kitchen stuff. My wife did the same a couple of years later.
That’s what we are looking for about 2,000 sqft, with heated garage, 2 spaces, and in unit laundry. Not in a hurry. We’d rather not be in a retirement community.
The garage is not heated but in the coldest weather it never drops below 45-ish. Dedicated spaces , very well protected by posts and four feet on each side of the cars.
In-unit laundry and large, modern windows were a must for me.
My downsize plan is to reduce component weight so that I can bench press the gear. Other than speakers I sticked to the plan pretty well. But there are more gears growing everywhere.
I will have the space, while I do plan to simplify (fewer components, less packaging storage, fewer cables, smaller rack) I will end up with a system that I hope I will enjoy just as much🙂
Also, I very much look forward to building this new system in the months to come
For me, it about simplifying and making things more manageable as I continue to age and eventually relocate the system. Really I just made the decision to get a jump on what for me, will be the eventual reality
Over the holidays, my daughter said “what are we going to do with all this stuff when you’re no longer around” a bit morbid? yes, but a good question nonetheless!
Fully understand those that have built big rigs and want to enjoy the fruits of that labor for as long as possible
I plan to enjoy the project as well, with the goal of a simplified and much different system system that I fully intent to enjoy
We still have most of my father’s system at his home where my mom still lives (under constant memory care).
His music room is still loaded with his DQ10, Mirage M3, SAE amp + pre amp, teac reel to reel, meridian cd, CJ amps, Adcom, Rotel AVR, etc etc etc.
We dont want to confuse mom thus it is still there but we wonder how we will deal with all of this (plus piano, violins, etc) when she is gone.
I understand your daughters’ concern. I told my kids, when I’m gone if you dont care for my audio stuff, call one of my friends and offer it all to them free of charge or donate it; no hard feelings. Sell the cars on BAT or similar and put the proceeds to good use.
