Thanks, Elk! Appreciate the support. I don’t think you’re wrong. Worst thing we can do is stick with
same old.
I love this real-world example of the challenges of design. Neat story.
Bob Lutz was my favorite. When he visited our assembly plant he always brought an entourage of beautiful woman kind of like a Robert Palmer video. He even had GM develop a V-16 wanting to make a Bugatti killer. But such excesses bankrupted the company and if it wasn’t a truck we never built it.
Here we go! What are your thoughts on the new FR-30s?
I personally really like these speakers and am looking forward to hearing them. I think the engineering/design is brilliant, really reminds me of the KEF Blades - which I’m a huge fan of. If these sound anything like the blades this will be a massive bargain.
What do you guys think? Please pick an option below:
“Shut-up and take my money!” - I like these speakers
“I’m on the fence.” - Moderate
“No thank you!” - I do not like these speakers
- Shut-up and take my money!
- I’m on the fence.
- No thank you!

FYI, if anyone is curious, this is what the inside of a kef blade looks like with its force cancelling woofer design:
There are similarities with the paired bass and concentric mid/tweeter, but I think there are more differences in the scale of the active bass, coupler, ribbons.
Let’s face it, the Kef Blade 2 was an instant design classic and in terms of sound won Best in Show when released at the Munich Show. They have colour options and are easy to drive.
I was surprised to see the Blade 2 are listed at £16,000, so if the FR-30 are $16,000 they will probably be the same or very similar price as the Blade 2 in the UK and Europe.
I must admit I like neither the Blade nor the FR-30 for design, but then I don’t even like the speakers I use. I don’t really like looking at speakers. I had D&D 8c in mind because they are small, white and go close to the wall. So if my views are worth anything, it’s that you won’t please everyone, speakers are very personal for design and sound, you just have to please enough people.
Really have to hear it. So none of the options apply for me really. Not referring to these speakers, but I kind of like speakers that have a unique look. Some or most might find them ugly. But in the end looks have no impact on I purchase. I think those horns that look like big tubas are kinda cool looking.
Yes on the one hand, to carefully wait for success until such a design philosophy is applied to the whole range makes sense. Too many companies which went or started into the direction of integrating, living room friendly design (I see Meridian, Revox, Linn, Diavalet etc.) seem to have lost reputation from the “tech freaks” and high end community. Makes no sense but I think it happens.
On the other hand I perceived from Paul’s statements that this isn’t a test case and they want to go this way definitely. No bad thing for me and rather a good direction…as I said, I’m just struggling with a lot of consequence on the one side and no overall concept (visible to public). If there’s one in the background, fine, if not, also fine, then we’re as early in the process as being part of Paul’s brain
Elk,
I saw that you locked my ‘Here we go! What are your thoughts on the new FR-30s?’ thread and buried it in this massive ‘Sneak Peak FR-30’ thread.
Is your goal by burying it in this thread to make it so no one can see/vote on the topic? These are separate(but similar) topics.
You have cut the effectiveness of the voting down massively by burying it in this massive thread which will be extremely hard to find now by someone casually putting around the PS Audio forums.
I know you are trying to help by consolidating things but imo some things(like the voting) needs to be easy to find and would be better if it were in a separate thread on the front page. The voting provides metric information which is useful to everyone including Paul.
I think you will notice that less and less people will find this voting post now and therefore less and less people will vote…making it less useful. In conclusion burying things that have individual purpose and require ease of access to the user does not makes sense to me and I don’t like it…sad face.
…but I still like you elk…but just as a friend now
Ryan
I thought the same thing. Just add a streamer to the Beolab 50 and your set.
Indeed! Forgot to name B&O
The top three products are from B&O
My old B and and O 4002/4 was one of the only gramophones with Thorens 126 where I had no acoustic feedback from my Infinity QRS 1 lol
Designed by Jacob Jensen, this was a cutting-edge technological landmark. The record player was distinguished by an innovative use of a tone-arm that moved tangentially, rather than diagonally, and thereby reproduced the sound the way it had been recorded. The unique suspension absorbed the horizontal movements from the surroundings, making Beogram 4000 more “dance proof” than any other record players on the market. The Beogram 400 was celebrated in the MoMa design collection for its stylish combination between the teak wood and aluminium surface along with its innovative vision in function.

WOW! Those ‘Beolab 50’ Speakers are really really cool imo!

Has anyone heard these??
They have great aesthetic imo - very unique. I would be worried about room placement though with all the different sides that have firing drivers. Although maybe it has some type of room DSP to mitigate such issues.
I understand your objection, but it is a small forum. We do not need a separate " What are your thoughts on the new PS Audio FR-30 Loudspeakers?" when this very topic is already being discussed - and all we can opine on is what we think of its appearance.
Thanks Paul for the response and further insight to the FR3 design goal. I have to be honest I’m a bit heart broken to see this design now committed for production. I would love to have a PS audio speaker in the house. But I felt like you may have surrounded yourself with a group that have the same likes as you and that may not be what a majority of what your customers wanted. Time will tell I guess.
I showed your 4k video of the FR-3 to my wife and my two daughters, all of them expressed very negative comments which I won’t share here. Food for thoughts.
Hello Poul
I want to see if I can get the Danish importer of PS audio to make some photos of the new speakers, along with Danish furniture design … It will look fantastic … more love Michael
I am interested in their opinions. Also, is there a speaker design they do like?
I find non-audio people only like small over everything else, and typically want pretty wood.
This is humorous coming from the Troublemaker who started a thread about how much he liked the old design:man_shrugging:t2:
