So variations now…

Tonight I was studying Yes, that old band. I was listening to a remastered version of Fragile, on South Side of the Sky, I thought Bill Bruford was buried deep in the mix. I am all about Bill. In my youth, when my hearing was better, I used to follow his drum hits like I needed to to survive. Tonight it seemed hard to follow. So I started searching the various versions. I found one I really like on my NAS. But there is no information on the recording. Searching Qobuz and Tidal I was looking for something that indicated “Original Mix”. I don’t think I found it. I do have the LP of it that I have owned since those days. Going to try it, but not tonight.

Anyone here do version studies? You don’t have to play the entire track to hear the differences. On South Side of the Sky I love the middle portion. Mmmmmm.

I used to adore Bruford’s drumming as well. . . oddly after he left Yes I never felt exactly the same bout his work with Crimson or as a leader.

I used to study a lot of different versions of many recordigns but don’t that much any longer. for “Fragile” I mainly llisten to the Steven Wilson “remix”. . . it has a great overall sound and a nice new “window” into the whole album.

I cued up that one second, thinking certainly Steve must feel the same way I do. But like the Joe Gastwirt remix, not enough Bill. Shadow Bill. The one I found on my NAS was more Bill. Later today I will listen to a 1971 pressing. Memories can get overly golden through the years.

I own several different formats of Steve’s mixes. They seem nice.

Nice.

I gave you a copy of the AP Atlantic 45 LP so you can compare the versions for me. lol :+1:t2:

I just played my Rhino from 2016. It’s real nice. The AP 45 is best imo.

Yup, everytime it was remastered, you lose something and everything is now loudnessed when remaster because:

tiny headphone sound better, car music sound better and that way with full spectrum, you listen less loud because, it sell more tiny headphone and protect in a way your hear, since you don’t have to raise volume for tiny detail!

Secondo, because of the fire at universal, almost all 50-60 and 70 music has disappear with the fire, so the do a copy of the copy, and to make sound better loudness it so fill the spectrum, cut the super high(detail, ambiance, room acoustic, etc.)

the worst they started with jazz and classical! so first gen CD on Discogs, are skyhigh price!

search the forum, you will be able to read those article that explain why remaster appear.

the worst are the look alike lp’s.

I had the chance to compare old led zeppelin, lp, cd, remaster, remaster of the remaster, it is not only the hiss of the tape that dissapear.

old led zed, first generation CD sound amazing, after that it’s crap!

and yes, yes is worst as the year goes on!

Also some artist, sell now, there re, recording of there original album (phil Collins with the old face art cover, Def Leppard first album). They seems to forget they are old and don’t have the freshness of success when they re-record there music!

And sometimes best left alone.
I have an Atlantic ‘82 buen precio (495 Pesetas) pressing bought in Spain. I seriously doubt it will rival my memory of afternoon Yes listening sessions over my buddy’s quadraphonic system typically in an altered state of mind.

Very good point. Even if one alters one’s mind now, it’s a different mind. . . now.

Terry Brown’s Grace Under Pressure is worth a listen. I can’t find a Vinyl only version yet other than the megabucks boxed set. Streamed it on Amazon Music. The differences between the original Peter Henderson and the TB remixes aren’t subtle. I actually prefer the TB remix and hope he see’s this through on the remainder of the 1980’s/1990s albums.

Just played the UHQR 45 RPM version. Followed it with the Mobile Fidelity 45 RPM version. Now listening to a 24.96 Needle Drop recording of the Original English release version. Now listening to a 24.96 version from a DVD Audio disk, ripped to my NAS. I think my favorite mix is the Joe Gastwirt version. He nailed the piano sounds perfectly. It is unique and quite lovely.

My memory is either taxed by my old ears or my memory was elevated over time.

Bill sounds distant and barely present in all versions. Perhaps a new fuse will help. But we didn’t have audiophile fuses in 1972.

earwax?

AP 45 version. There hasn’t been a UHQR version of Fragile.

There is a UHQR of ZZ Top Tres Hombres now. I might know a guy who ordered a copy.

Sorry. I am old and easily confused.

I knew what you meant. I didn’t want people searching for a $150 record. Who would do that?

How many variations of Supertramp? I have one SACD from Japan and played it once. Maybe I will try it on PMGs since I don’t remember how did it sound.

Breakfast in America? There’s a ton. Lol
