Speaker setup - No image depth

I spent the past week moving my speakers about to find an improvement in bass and a more ‘detached from the speakers sound’. I almost ended up where I started as this is the most practical location as it is in our living room where me and my better half spent most of the time. What strikes me most and should be taken seriously in the equation is that using one cd over another can really change ones opinion over the location…I find for example Aaron Parks’ cd Little big sound just perfect in the ‘old spot’ while using John Scofield’s This meets that doesn’t sound less involving and a bit disappointing. I think the recording quality does make or break the experience. Now find the best recordings…

Uh, but then you’re in the „I just listen to the music that sounds right on my setup“ trap

I suppose you are right in that respect… Mmm, but if so why should I bother relocating speakers if the one record sounds great in that position and the other cd sounds mèèh…? The best gear, the best location… versus the best recording or a mediocre recording… better focus on finding new music, instead of moving large speakers about. Some sound crap but if the music is OK it may be worth anyway.

The thing is, you need one position where especially bass FR is flattest and imaging best. The better this can be achieved, the more different sounding recordings can be played satisfyingly. The problem of recordings sounding nameably different in tonality is only solvable with tonality adjustment options in the setup.

I know this is contrary to the definition of today’s high end setups (except that active speakers offer lossless adjustment options). Which is one reason why I use active speakers.

There are not many other good (and therefore lossless) options for music lovers caring for optimal tonality than this or establishing near perfect FR in an optimized room.

The sense of depth did not increase but the wide of the soundstage is must better. I guess that’s because of less side reflections.

But I just can’t get the bass right. The best over all sound was this speaker position. FW 2m, between speakers around 210 and 230 away from them

I think there are quite a few speakers meanwhile with DSP‘able bass. Maybe you should try one, Just to know if this might make you happy some time. But not cheap I guess.

A differently sized speaker with sub support might also be much easier to integrate than your large speakers.

I have been thinking of a pair of standmount speakers and a pair of real subs or spatial audio x3 with build in sub. There are also dipole and will have fewer sidewall reflections

Good idea…a speaker large enough to cover the punch area well and small enough to not cover the critical room nodes…and a sub with EQ’ing option…and you can try it before buying I guess.

I have a friend with a pair of REL hifi subs. And I think I lent a pair of small good speakers from my dealer.
The spatial audio X3 can only be bought from the US. So that will be a leap of faith

Those speakers seem to be special…not sure if you’d want a horn loaded tweeter in your room. But a normal implementation of an AMT would be great of course.

Why not a horn loaded tweeter? is it producing to much energy = reflections?

It’s producing more energy (although an AMT already is a dynamic enough sounding tweeter due to the big folded surface) and the horn widens the dispersion pattern (which enables more reflections. While I’m sure the speaker designer cared for good tonality integration of that horn design, the wider dispersion pattern might not be what you want, even if it enables a wider sweet spot.
