Stellar GainCell DAC/preamp vs. Yamaha S501 subwoofer output question

After having made the switch, there is one thing that I’m a little disappointed/confused about with the output of my subwoofers now…

I used the XLR out into a splitter cable and then one XLR to the M700 amps and one XLR directly into my JL F113 subwoofer, for each channel. I know that I’m getting the purest of full range signals now and there is great integration. However, the M700 are powering my Polk SDA-SRA loudspeakers so well that I basically listen to the preamp at vol 30 max, the subs are great at that volume…but I have to turn the subs up on their vol knobs more than when I had my entry level Yamaha 2 channel integrated amp. That amp had a dedicated RCA subwoofer out, single channel that I ran into an RCA splitter and then into each sub. I now have stereo subs with the Gaincell, but why the reduction of output?

I guess the Yamaha internally boosted the subwoofer signal with different input or output voltage? I guess that’s not as idea from a purist listening stand point? But at lower volumes with the Gaincell preamp, like at 11 or 12, I’d like those subs more present.

Is there something I’m missing? Is it the limitations of the gain cell in particular or is it the way they are hooked up? I already tried using just the RCA outputs on the gain cell, and pulling the sub signal from the amp speaker level outputs then a converter, the XLR are the best. Should I explore a different preamp?
