Yes, well there are not any record shops here within 30 miles and I am sequestering myself being 65 and not wanting to get the COVID virus one of my brothers and my father have suffered through. . . . Buying cds online is a lot easier than risking vinyl online. I’m glad I enjoy cds as both cost and availability is very favorable, and I had my decadesa of vinyl–and cassette–feels like going backwards to me. Vive la difference.

That SFJazz Collective from their fourth tour is sounding really good! I put Type 80 Globe rectifiers back in my preamp and monoblocks–with recent changes they are sounding better than ever!

Ahhh yes, Mr Moore - one of my faves!

I was a bit dubious about this 2008 release, but the shear quality of playing and recording gets me each time. Worth a listen indeed.

I agree, vinyl online has a gamble aspect to it. How is your father doing now?

He seems to have beaten the C-Diff which is huge. But. . . he’s hardly eating and he’s not . . . fighting. We have been allowed compassionate visits, two persons twice a week. I saw him ten days ago and will see him again Sunday. We’re still hoping he’ll pull through this but unless he starts eating far more than he has . . . .

I’ll sleep better one of these days!

Thanks gentlemen. I don’t mean to disrupt the jazz discussion with my own family situation.

I just got this boxset in the mail last night. Looking forward to diving into it one disc at a time. I got one of the last of the “first edition,” not that that makes a real difference.

Always share whatever you would like regarding your family situation.

Thanks Elk.

Listening to the first disc of this set I am coming to the conclusion that Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez is a brilliant singer. This is the second time I’ve encountered her and I’m very impressed. Wish she had cds to buy! Her singing makes me think of Grace Slick as a seasoned jazz singer fronting an R&B band. If that makes any sense.

As it is -6 degrees F here I’m chillin’ to Wes Montgomery. Leading off with Full House featuring the Wynton Kelly Trio with the addition of Tenor sax player Johnny Griffin. The interplay between Wes and Wynton is exceptional… Love Johnny Griffin’s tenor work. Follow-up with Boss Guitar featuring Mel Rhyne on organ and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Boss Guitar is a bit of a throw back to the Indianapolis Wes Montgomery sound. Enjoying both on Japanese import vinyl… Nice quiet pop and tick free surfaces with the warmth this music demands.

Moving onto Live Air on Black Saint Records, Italian vinyl pressing. Steve McCall (dr), Fred Hopkins (b) and Henry Threadgill (fl,as,ts). Just finished side two’s offering of Keep Right on Playing Thru the Mirror Over the Water, classic Live Air.

Yet another fine series from the House of Parker, William in this case. It does have me wondering about the viability of large box sets going forward. Ten CDs can be, well, OVERWHELMING.
I’ll blame Keith Jarrett and Manfred Eicher for ecm’s release of the Sun Bear Concerts. I’m not necessarily criticizing the performances, but 10 LPs or CDs. It is becoming a trend within a certain element of jazz, with Ken Vandermark, William Parker, and Anthony Braxton.

I’m fine with this trend. No one “has” to buy them. As long as it’s quality music I like having a heaping helping to explore and digest.

Right now, scratching my frequent itch to play Jobim music.

Joe Henderson “Double Rainbow–The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim” Verve cd.
