Quite languid, ain’t it?
Just bought the 13 CD Box, $53.71 seemed too good to pass on. Thanks for the link
Gradually working my way through the box of 24 SHM CDs from CDJapan. Some fill gaps in my collection, some will replace the GRP-Impulse CDs from the 80’s/90’s.
Nordstrom moment, nuff said. Just re-listened to it. Couldn’t finish it. Not my flavor I guess.
My taste leans more to Leo Wadada Smith, Rosa Parks for instance:
Dusty Grooves, a real gem IMHO. Pre Covid-19 it would be a routine road trip. Last time I stopped in Dusty Grooves a friend and I left with 3 large cartons of Jazz LPs. That would have been January 2020.
Streaming the compilation in eager anticipation of the Box Set.
Rather uusual instrumentation for this one, Piano, Tuba, Trumpet, and Alto Sax. Still trying to sort this one out.
That must be the root of the problem
Archie Shepp “Blase into Yasmina Revisited” Ezzthetics cd.
Followed by
Cecil Taylor “Mixed to Unit Structures Revisited” Ezzthetics cd
Got in a package from squidco yesterday with the latest Ezzthetics cds. Listening to these I’d say . . . they are definitely remastered. Not at all compressed. But. . . in the case of the Taylor I’d say I prefer the most recent Japanese reissues I have of these. The Ezzthetics have a more “cerebral/analytical” sound to them, the Japanese cds more depth and body to the sound. Not extreme, each is just on the other side of an imaginary ‘NEUTRAL’ signature between those characteristics. Been a while since I have heard my earlier versions of the Shepp and they are 45 miles away in my storage unit. . . somewhere in one of thirty boxes or so.
The Shepp I have on Actuel LPs. Your mentioning them will most likely result in my revisiting them. No need for duplicate copies on CD. The Cecil Taylor Unit Structures I have on vinyl. The Mixed Unit Structures has me slightly confused, as it lists a 1961 recording. I do have Mixed on CD, you would not happen to know if they are associated with an earlier LP release? Obviously it is time I dig into more of my Cecil Taylor collection.
The “Mixed” material are from the three tracks of Cecil Taylor on the Gil Evans “Into the Hot” LP from 1961.
Yeah, figured it out right after I posted. It’s been that kind of morning. The CT I have on vinyl. From what I remember the early US CD releases were abominable in terms of sound quality. Thanks for the clarification.
Well I’m on my third listen for the incredible Pharaoh Sanders album. Having it on SHM-CD does not hurt. This acquisition has filled a significant gap in my Pharaoh Sanders collection. Pharaoh on sax is fantastic, joined by Cecil McBee on bass (always a fan of his work), and Marvin Peterson on Trumpet.
I can’t recommend this enough for those who appreciate Spiritual Jazz of the late '60s and early 70’s. Put the Brit resurgence of the 2010-2020’s to shame, I’m thinking Shabaka Hutchings, Sons of Kemet, and their ilk.
Yeah, I’m mostly a cd person as I have about 60 times more cds than LPs and my digital sounds better than my vinyl playback. I find that the Japanese cds of the 21st century generally sound much better than previous jazz reissues, and the Taylor that I have from the last few years is a prime example–excellent sounding. I like to do comparisons so I ordered the Taylor Ezzthetics (Hat Art) cd and it too sounds very very good. Quite interesting to compare masterings done right for subtle differences.
Right now
SFJazz Collective “Original Compositions and works by Thelonious Monk” disc 1 (the Monk material)
I don’t chase format too much, as CDs in my collection tend to be based on availability of the music. I have a strong preference for vinyl. So I have a bunch of '80s and 90’s CDs on Blue Note, Prestige, and Impulse that were not readily available on LP. I have since acquired more recent LP versions of those. At some point my CD versions will either be sold or donated. Most are ripped to my Innuos ZENith, it is full at the moment. The rest of my CDs are from more obscure bands/labels with limited releases that were only available on CD, from the 90’s to present day. In summary the performance comes first, always, format follows. When the choice is available I opt for vinyl. That said the SHM-CDs are a nice option.
Vive la difference. I find the pricing on new LPs to be ridiculously high. . . and most of what has been released I’ve had several versions of since the 'seventies. I guess I prefer cd as I can’t invest enough in gear to make the vinyl playback overtake the digital and I would consider that if the LP costs weren’t so high. There is far more I want to explore (I don’t do streaming of music or files etc.) on cd than vinyl, which is a good thing cost wise for me on a puny fixed income.
I can do each, Vinyl, CD and Stream. Most Vinyl I have was acquired when issued, save the rare BlueNote, Impulse and Prestige. Original cost was not too ridiculous. Having access to Jazz Record Mart in Chicago didn’t hurt either. I agree the new vinyl for jazz can be pricey, some worth and then again, maybe not. What I find curious is smaller regional bands around here are releasing on cassette.
I think well sourced and produced LP‘s will get a treasure like master tapes some time and prices for new audiophile releases will further increase as soon as pressing machines or cutting tools will be a more limiting factor. I hope cheaply produced LP‘s won’t replace the perfect remasterings we still get today.
I already have many examples of that where vintage LP prices have gone through the roof. Especially obscure jazz on vinyl. An example in my collection is this Ted Curson LP, which I have had multiple unsolicited offers on:
