Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 1)

Minnesota pianist did a Monk recording that I enjoyed. Laura Caviani. Let me know what you think if you’d care too.

In general I agree, covering Monk, Evan, and for me Guaraldi is tough territority.

Observation #1: This is my favorite forum. #2: It seems to have unseated the YouTube forum in popularity. #3: many more posts tonight than last night. Conclusion #1 about observation #3: PS Audio jazz lovers are party animals!

Happy New Year and happy listening.

Nice live recording from Chicago’s Jazz Showcase circa March 2002, available as a name-your-price download on Bandcamp in lossless FLAC (among other file formats):

Lou Donaldson’s 1957 bebop release Lou Takes Off kicks off with the high energy Sputnick.
This mono set features Donald Byrd on trumpet , Sonny Clark on piano, Curtis Fuller trombone, Jamil Nasser bass, Art Taylor drums, and Lou on alto sax.

With references to Wadada’s early works with Anthony Braxton and Leroy Jenkins, Wadada asks the question: does free bop or free improvisation work sans bass? Indeed it does for this listener. The work on this trio set is nothing less than stunning, by any means necessary.

I think you may also enjoy the Wadada Leo Smith A Love Sonnet for Billie Holiday. It features Vijay Iyer and Jack Dejohnette. Some what subdued but each of the three is at the top of their game. Unfortunately it is not presently available to stream on TIdal. I have a considerable number of new recordings to go through, and this is a stand-out.

Couldn’t find it on Qobuz either.

Will keep an eye out for it…

Tyree Glenn “At the Embers” Roulette LP

A studio album though one might think it’s live. I really love Glenn’s playing. And this is one of the three he released with Hank Jones at the piano–a great thing.
