Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 1)

Dave Douglas’ Soul on Soul, heading in a different direction than the avant garde work with John Zorn. Covering four Mary Lou Williams compositions. A bit looser and freer post bop form, a predictor of things to come from Dave. I am thoroughly enjoying Dave, Chris Speed and Uri Caine on this set. Joey Baron gets a bit carried away on the batterie for my ear, but no complaints.

I always dug the photo cover which I am pretty sure comes from the classic jazz film “Jammin’ the Blues” . . . .

For those who are fans of vinyl and Kenny Dorham, this showed up on the Elusive Disc website this afternoon, I believe there may be and IMPEX SACD as well.

nice! thanks for the heads up

Reissue due out February 2022. I have not seen a published firm date, and these tend to slip. I have an early LP copy, and a Delmark from the 70’s as well so won’t be looking for yet another copy.

Saturday Night at the Village Vanguard, and the audience discussion in the bar is driving our cat nuts. That aside some fine piano work interplay by George Cables, and with Art on alto, Elvin’s accents, and George Mraz laying out a groove on The Trip. Is it Art’s best, well by no means. Is it fun and do I wish I was in on it at the Vanguard, YEAH!

Well Saturday was so enjoyable I moved on to More for Les with Arts from the heart introduction of his band, George Cables, George Mraz, and Elvin Jones. The whole series is solid, as our cat can attest, his tail moving in step with the beat. Jazz Cat indeed.

It’s quite an interesting session. Probably the best Arco playing I’ve heard Chambers do is on this one.

Late start for the morning with McCoy Tyner’s The Greeting, featuring George Adams on soprano, tenor and flute. Magnificent and free wheeling high energy McCoy. The stand-out on this LP is Fly With the Wind.
