Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 1)

Thanks for sharing :+1:t2:

Neat. Down in the WEEDS, some seriously obscure stuff.

There are four I do not have. I picked up most of them “in the day” as they say.

Dimensional Stardust, new album from Rob Mazurek/Exploding Star Orchestra. Eleven musicians, very interesting music and arrangements. 88/24 from tidal.

Omar Sosa & NDR Big Band, Arrangements by Jacques Morelenbaum

I had to listen to this one again today. Morelenbaum arranging this band and Sosa’s playing and compositions. . . in spectacular sound. To hear this presented this way is one reason I’m an audiophile as well as a music-lover.

Kenny Barron “Sambao” Gitanes Jazz cd

Kenny Barron – piano
Toninho Horta – guitar
Nico Assumpção – bass
Mino Cinelu – percussion
Victor Lewis – drums

Original compositions of Barron’s that show his strong musical identity and evoke Brasil–not an easy task. I love this one.

Cal Massey “Blues to Coltrane” Candid/Solid Records Japan mono cd.

Sounds so good compared to my earlier version. There should have been more Massey led sessions in the past. He was an interesting writer.

Was fortunate to hear Shabaka Hutchings play a guest spot a few years ago. Billy Harper behind him and film in my camera! A fabulous musician.

I like this one. I saw 3/4 of this quartet (Rivers, Holland, Daley) play at DCSpace way back when. Just amazing.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk, The Case of the Three Sided Dream:

Musical innovator and polyglot defining Black Classical Music in the 60’s and 70’s.
Just wrapped up viewing Adam Kahan’s documentary The Case of the Three Sided Dream. In the day, I was still trying to get a foothold into jazz listening, I had discounted Rahsaan as a showboat or novelty act. How wrong I was. Rahsaan assembled a group to play Stevie Wonders’ Mon Cherie Amour, as arranged with Ed Sullivan’s Producers, as they believed the show’s traditional audience would relate to the song. The devilish Rahsaan, agreed in advance, but the prankster that Rahsaan was, and to best represent Black Classical Music to a 1971 TV audience, Rahsaan substituted Charlie Mingus’ Haitian Fight Song. Superb playing, and the cats did not hold back. The set features Charles Mingus, Roy Haynes, and Archie Shepp. Further into the film Rahsaan plays Good Bye Pork Pie Hat, MIngus’ Lester Young tribute., yet another strong performance.

For the curious, the documentary is currently available on Amazon Prime:

The documentary wraps up nicely with Theme for Eulipions.

I really enjoyed her playing on Tomas Fujiwara’s ‘7 Poets Trio’, so I scooped this up, solo vibes, pretty low-key, very pleasant.

It’s gonna be a Rahsaan day, now where did I put that nose whistle?

This 32 Jazz 3 CD set starts out strong with some early Kirk in a more hard bop mode, still with his quirks and harmonic signature. The set also includes Natural Black Inventions: Root Strata.

Added this to my listening queue as well as Patricia Brennan’s Maquishti.
